random question: what do they do with the special needs bags after races?

They usually throw them in a big pile and if you want (and are lucky) you can find yours and get the stuff back. But there is no guarantee about them. I'd guess that after that they just toss them. Some smell REALLY bad after being in the sun all day so I wouldn't want to have to sort through them!

At IM they tell you not to expect them back, but typically they will dump them in a designated area and you can sift through them to find yours.
Tho, some people seem to use it as an opportunity to do some "shopping".
Best bet is to not put anything in there that you won't mind not getting back.
Then they toss whatever is left. Sometimes goes to charity - but usually things are pretty gross, so they just get tossed.

yeah, i'd think it would be a great shame to toss all those durable goods (extra tubes, co2, clothing, etc)...would make good tri dumpster diving to be sure!

Special needs bag diving? Did it. After my first IM (IMLP '03) they had this huge pile of bags next to the dumpster at the high school...one of the volunteers was picking them up and tossing them in the dumpster...I asked if he'd mind if I sifted through them...he said go ahead... I got one Conti Sprinter, some tubes, a hand full of Co2 carts, a nifty jacket that I still have, and a dozen water bottles. Then I helped him finish the job.
They are usually very clear that there is a really good chance that you won't get your stuff back...By Monday after noon if they aren't trash, they're picked clean.

Never pack a special needs bag with something you can't absolutely do without or can't bear losing.
