Help me understand

Hello, folks.

I've been reading on the training section but there are a thing or two I can't understand. For example.

How do you guys spread your workouts? On what days do you run, swim and bike? Do you combine two on the same day? How often do you rest?

I suffer from reading comprehension so maybe I'm not reading right.

Oh...I've been running like a crazy person and I'm hurting in places and muscles I didn't know I had. :D

Next stop is swimming in the lake. More pain to go, please?

good question. not sure what distance you're training for (hint: fill out your profile :)) but I created a new section in training with some programs: http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/training-programs/index.php
there's a beginner/sprint article in there and it breaks things down to 1 discipline per day, 6 days a week, 2 days per discipline and one day off.

The other is an ironman plan and it has multiple workouts and displines per day.

For me (training for Olympic) it looks like this (though a little shy on the swimming in the early months, it will pick up to resume the below schedule next month):

mon: light swim, recovery run
tues: weights, bike
wed: swim, tempo/medium length run
thur: bike
fri: weights, shorter run
sat: long bike
sun: long run

that's the basic plan for me. I adapt it as needed. For example I may move the workouts around to fit my schedule. Also come spring, summer I add a bike day and do it mon, wed, fri, sat and move the runs to the other days. usually every 10th day is a full day off, but mon & fri are easier recovery days.

I agree with tribro: your training mix will vary depending on what distances you are training for and where your weaknesses are. If you're already a good cyclist, you can concentrate less on cycling and more on swimming and/or running.

For me, training for an Ironman distance race in July, my current mix looks like this:

Monday: Swim in the morning, easy run at lunch or after work
Tuesday: bike
Wednesday: Swim in the morning, tempo/speedwork run at lunch or after work.
Thursday: Easy run
Friday: short bike 3 weeks out of four. Fourth week off
Saturday: Long bike
Sunday: Long run

Looking back, it's actually pretty similar to tribro's schedule which leads me to think that either I'm friggin' lazy or he's pretty hardcore! :)

I'm totally new to this. My first race is in about a month. I'm a pretty good swimmer/cyclist but I just started running last week.

Right now I'm just building bases so to speak and I'm running two miles three times a week. I'm doing this in under 20.00 minutes without much effort. I'm planning to increase to three miles next week.

I'm not hardcore to any extent. I just like the biking and running, but I don't cover much ground for the time I spend on both. i'll be shooting for a 1/2 later in the season.

My brothers are hardcore: 15-20,000 yards swim, 300 miles bike, and 30-40 miles run - per week. Basically I take the jet ski on the swims, the scooter on the bike rides, and mountain bike on the run (and get dropped on the climbs) :)

I would say you're doing the right thing by focussing on the run since that is your limiter at the moment. You're probably fine with 2 swim sessions and 2 bike sessions each week and 3 runs. Perhaps something like this:

Mon: Swim
Tues: Easy run
Wed: Swim AM, Easy bike PM
Thu: Easy run
Fri: Off
Sat: Longer bike
Sun: Longer run

Keep in mind that you don't want to ramp up too quickly. Try to stick with the 10% rule. Never increase any workout distance by more than 10%/week.

Good luck at your race. Be sure to tell us all about it.

Sounds good. So the distance in my running should not be increased that much, right?

What worries me is that by june 5/05 I'm gonna have to be able to run 13.1 miles.

This is the beauty of triathlon. Its very challenging to train for 3 different events.
I think that's why people get hooked on it.
My training schedule looks pretty much like all the others.

Mon. Lift weights at noon, Bike after work
Tue. Swim at noon, Run after work
Wed. Lift weights at noon, Bike after work
Thur. Swim at noon, Run after work
Fri. Lift weights at noon.
Sat. Long Run with running club
Sun. Long Ride

Good luck in your event!

Tri-Wannabe,

You might want to start taking one day a week to do a long run. Maybe try to do a 6 mile run this weekend at a comfortable pace. Don't worry about how long it takes you.

My week looks something like this:

Mon: S) 3,500m to 4,000m
Tues: B) 1:30 Windtrainer Class
Weds: S) 3,000M R) 8 to 10 miles
Thur: B) 1:00
Fri: Day Off
Sat: R) 2 to 3 hours
Sun: B) 40 to 60 miles

When most of you say run 2-3 hours do you mean non-stop? Is this at a steady easy pace or at a race-fast pace?

My long runs are done at a comfortable pace where I can hold a conversation with my running partner. They are mostly non stop (we set up water stops about every 4 miles where we will stop and drink a cup of water before continuing).

LSD = Long Slow Distance, do this at a steady pace. If you do it at race pace you'll be ruined for a few days.

Another thing you can do on your long run days is to throw in a 1 minute walk break every 10 minutes or so. This will help you add distance while you're still building endurance. Gradually, you can increase the running intervals until you no longer need them.

Don't be fooled into thinking walk breaks are "cheating". They can be very a effective way to cover long distances. I did my very first marathon doing 12 minutes running and 1 minute walking and finished in a respectable 3:32.

don't over due it with the running... its the first place to get injured.

i suggest dont ever run more than 2 days in a row. especially if you are swimming and running.

its just not needed for the avg. triathlete.

my 2 cents.

Ya gotta give us more info to work with, buddy. Like tribro says, please fill out your profile, then we can adjust advice accordingly.

Just jogging every other day, say, 3 times a week and increasing your weekly mileage by no more than 5% for the next 100 days will be enough to finish 13.1 miles in June, assuming you aren't planning to win the damn thing!

Training to finish, which is what all beginners should be doing if they're sensible, just isn't that hard. Take it one workout at a time.

My schedule for what it is worth involves doing 2 sports daily - an hour or so on the bike trainer, swimming Sat/Sun, and my running will gradually increase 5-10% per week up to a marathon in May. Then I will start riding longer and in July start swimming in the lake.
IM Canada is 200 days away: August 28.

Piece of cake.

Thanks all for the prompt replies.

I'm not planning to win. I just want to finish. The good thing about me is that I'm a pretty fit person and I've built a base over the years. I've been cycling for the last five years and I do as much as I can to stay fit.

I know that 5-10% is probably the smart thing to do but I didn't get up from a couch and started to excersice. Like I said, I've been doing something to stay fit for as long as I can remember.

If I see that I'm not suffering and that I can take bigger steps, unless you more experince triathletes advice me not to, I'll try to do it.

Yesterday I increased my running milage to 3. I was riding at a very steady tempo and did the 3 miles in 35:03.

So the main question is, am I doing this right or should I take it easy.

I also have a couple of smaller races before June 5th. I guess that'll let me know how to race smart and not get killed in a leg so that I can do the next one.
