I’ve been on the site here and there for the last year but just recently decided to start contributing to the forum. So here is my official Hello 

I started tri’ing just last year doing an Olympic distance tri with Team In Training. I was instantly hooked and found after 2 tri’s that the Olympic distance although was great didn’t fuel the flame I had burning inside….so I went on to train for my first ½ iron. The Amphibious San Diego Superfrog which was put on by the Navy Seals. I figured if I was going to do one why not do one of the most challenging courses out there right? No, no, not really. My father is sick and won’t be around much longer so the point of doing that course was to have him there and be able to see me doing what I love. During the duration of my first ½ iron I swam in an open ocean with 225 athletes, 200 being males and only 10% civilians (BIG MEN). Encountered 3-5 ft swells while San Diego decided to have their once in a blue moon storm of the century, almost hurled from motion sickness as the waves tossed me around like a rag doll, and had the joy of having my lip split. But none of that held me back as I went on to do the 56 mile ride along Coronado hwy. Nice 4 loop out and back, going out pushing a pathetic 15mph with a 178 HR while my insides came out for the first 20 mins from salt water. Mmmmm, tasty. Thankfully the way back was an effortless 26mph. The course was flat, we had a nice head/tail wind. During the 3rd loop turnaround I didn’t break soon enough and Cadence (my bike) drifted out from under me only to leave me with a cut knee and greasy from putting her chain back off. Alas on to my favorite part of the tri; the run. 13.1 mile 5 loop run course all on sand. 50% hard packed sand, a nice 7 foot hill mid way with 50% loose sand. Never ran on the sand before and frankly after that I never want to again. But in the end my dad tried to race the last 400m to the finish, beer in hand. Lol, which made it all worth while, until he picked me up and spun me around and I puked on him  My goal was a 6 hr race and I came in 6:06…which wasn’t bad considering everything I endured.
Anywho….

I’m currently training for the Pacific Crest ½ Ironman in Sun River this Saturday. Hoping for a sub 6 hr race. Training should put me there; we’ll just see how I deal with the altitude and heat. I have another ½ iron planned in mid August and then I will be going up to Canada to volunteer and sign up for IM Canada 09. My first marathon will follow in the beginning of Oct.

Enough about me…..Nice to meet everyone!!!

Wow...you sure know how to pick a tough one for your first HIM. Great job and puking on your Dad had to make it all worth while. Oh...and welcome to posting on Trifuel...like triathlons - it's addicting too!

Good luck! I will be at Pac Crest doing the HIM too---It is a beautiful course. Weather should be in the high 80s it looks like, but the water is still COLD (low -mid 50s still) so not excited about that part. Enjoy the race!

It's 61 today and will warm up a bit more by race day. Cold water doesn't frighten me much, running at 3800ft elevation in 80+ degree's does on the other hand.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :D

PacCrest's website says the water has warmed to a balmy 61 degrees. And predictions are for temperatures in the '90s. Looks like it will be a hot one!

KitKat, congrats on your races so far, and I hope you have a terrific time at the PacCrest 1/2 Iron. I will be there with my Team in Training team (I'm coaching) and as I said in another thread, I'm dying my hair purple so my team can spot me. So if you see me, say hi. Or post your race # here and we will cheer you across the line if we see you!

Robin,
I'll be doing this event with TNT as well, the Portland team. Are you coaching the Eugene team?

Yep, I'm coaching the Eugene team, we are small but mighty (small especially compared to your amazingly huge Portland team this year!). So we should see you at the pasta party and everything. Say hi!!!! Gotta love these trifuel connections...

Sadly, our HIM athlete from our team found out this week that he has a blood clot in his leg and can't compete. I'm really glad he found out now (instead of during the race, for sure), but still bummed for him to be missing it after all of his training and all. So I only have Oly athletes now.

Yea, our team is almost double last year and thus far we've raised $330,300! Pretty exciting. Sorry to hear about your halfer, but as you said, better to find out before the race.

Might I vent a little? I freaking hate Oregon weather!!!! This whole season it has rained, snowed and been so cold I thought I didn't have limbs. We had 1 day of training in 80+ degree weather and now come race day I'm looking to do my HIM in 90? WTF?! This really irritates the hell out me. Heat + Kat = melted mess :(

At least I'll get to meet you at the pasta party....before the sun decimates me that is.

I am SO with you on that. I mentioned in another post--last weekend we left on our ride and it was 48 and drizzly---my freaking toes never warmed up, numb the entire ride. This whole winter/spring we have had is what is keeping me from registering for IMCDA next year (another post)--I notice it is still open, so THINKING on it. It is just so early and having to do those lonnnngggg rides in the cold rain frighten me. At least with IMC , August gives a few extra months, and in the past we have headed to Eastern WA for heat...(know it COULD be hot for IMC, the first year I did it , it was 94 when I started the run, last year it was only in the 70's, PERFECT).

I AM GOING TO DIE IN THE HEAT THIS WEEKEND!!!! WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Now I don't know if I should go with the sleeveless wet suit or full now that the water is warmer. Thoughts????? I HATE full suits, just dont feel like I get the shoulder rang of motion I would like.

Are you going to sign up for IMC? I'm volunteering this year and signing up for 09.
Well at least I won't be passed out on the run course alone :) got to love mile 11-12 with no shade! I think I'm going to have to revise my 6 hour time goal, blah.

I'll be rockin my sleeveless. I can't do sleeved wetsuits, I'd prefer to freeze. I can handle cold better then restriction. It should be pretty warm anyway.

Okay, I'm sorry. I have to ask. If I'm the only one who's wondered, then I'm going to hell, but I'm just curious. What's up with your avatar? Is there some story behind the picture or something? Are you wearing anything?

Also, if anyone else has wondered the same thing, let us know so I don't feel like such a big pervert.

Not this year---I messed up and planned a vacation during that time so I cannot register. Plus I really want to do a different one. I had decided on Az after rethinking the winter training, but now I am vascilating because I am worried about getting into it. I will probably do Canada again after that , it really is an awesome race, I cannot say enough good things about it. If you plan to hotel it , call OK reservations (all hotels go through them...I should have their number still) FIRST THING to get a room, stuff fills up fast and everyone requires a 5 night min.

Ok, think I will cancel my full suit rental. I told myself I would never do a race cold enough to need one..ahahhahahahh I REALLY prefer to swim with out one completely but that won't be an option. I will be wearing my booties though. They will help with that dirt run up to T1 (although I have never tried them, should be fun). Thanks for the advice! I seriously will die in the heat, at least its only a half and some shade though so that will be nice.

My TNT Coach will be doing it with me and we are getting our lodging hooked up with the San Fran TNT team :) works out perfect!

I'm with you on hating the crazy weather. Though it really really makes me wish I'd signed up for IMCdA for 2008. The weather was perfect! I've never considered this race because too many friends have gotten roasted there and I don't do well in the heat but I so would've loved it this year. The course is so pretty.
