Hey there peeps,
I've been lurking on and off the site since last year when I decided to do my first tri in 2008. I appreciate all of the good info everyone posts. Haven't been able to train much lately due to job and other responsibilities, but there's a sprint tri in St Augustine Fl this weekend that I've registered for. I figure I'll at least finish it and have fun doing so. So we're taking a family trip to the beach this weekend.

I'm still a bit confused about the best way to get all of my gear to the starting location in the morning. Do I drive over to the starting area from the hotel with all my stuff in the car or should I have someone drive me and drop me off. I suppose I'll get answers to all of that when I show up to pick my registration the day before.

There should be parking at the race. Or if your hotel is close enough, you can put your stuff in a backpack and ride over.

Good Luck Man.

I was hoping to get that weekend off to do the St Aug Tri myself.

But, of course, I'm working.

Maybe I'll get to do the Tigershark here in Daytona in a few weeks.

Tell us how your weekend shapes up!

Is that the new DeSoto transition bag? I hear it comes with the sherpa.

How did the race go?
I will be down in St Augustine next week for vacation.

I love running on the beach. Any local events the week of June 28th - July 5th ?

The race was great. There weren't many people, probably 40 something people in the sprint and perhaps that amount for the Oly distance. The half mile ocean swim went well, I came out of the water about in the middle of the pack. I was one of the slowest on the ride and the run was hell but I finished the race and wasn't last. Had a great time. I was slow in the transition, something I can work on though.

The start of the race was marred by a near tragic accident. After the National anthem had played and we were about to start, the small motor boat that was offshore, presumeably for safety reasons, was hit by a wave and the driver got knocked out of the boat. The person was OK, but the unmanned boat was now spinning in circles just offshore. Everyone stood around trying to figure out what to do (obvious choices were to call the Coast Guard or wait till it ran out of fuel.

Then someone, either a contestant or lifeguard, decided to try to stop the boat. He approached the boat that was now in shallow water near the sand bar and threw himself at the side of the spinning boat, trying to grab hold. He couldn't get a grip, slipped off and went under, with the boat cutting across where he went under. He got hit by the propeller, his leg was severely cut and he had to be pulled out of the water, and was taken away, eventually by an ambulance. He's lucky the prop didn't hit his head or he'd probably have been killed.

I haven't heard anything about his condition. It may have been a career ending injury, I hope he recovers.

beads, I don't know if there are any events scheduled in St Aug for this coming weekend but the beaches there are great, you'll enjoy running there, suggest you do it before 10 AM unless you like to run in the heat.

Hope to do another sprint tri at the end of July at Silver Springs, FL

thanks for the encouraging words from everyone

Lots of people are killed that way... a very stupid risk IMO, he's lucky he wasn't killed. I remember a kid being run over by a boat and killed while waterskiing at a cottage I was staying at, it was appalling.

The only water craft I intend to be neear ia a boogie board.

I usually get up and run at 6:15- 6:30 and it is still pretty warm and lots of people are out. I'll be there in a few more days!! ;-)
