stiff pad on bike shorts

The pad in my fairly new bike shorts has started to feel a bit weird. I guess stiff and not as smooth would be a decent way to describe the feeling. They weren't the cheapest of shorts but I'm sure they are not top quality either. I wash and dry them on delicate every time but maybe I've messed them up somehow.

Is this the time where I rub something on them to soften the pad? Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get my comfy softness back?

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Never dry your bike shorts

So I just rub that directly on the pad after I wash the shorts? Does it absorb into the pad or will it get me all greasy when I put the shorts on?

oops I thought if I dried them on low that would be okay. I always need them the next day so I guess I should invest in two pairs, huh!

I have washed my shorts the night before I need them. If you just hang them up, they'll dry really fast, so you don't have to worry about that.

You put Chamois lube/butter/cream on the pad just before you ride. experiment with how much you like. My saddle is slippery after my rides, and one time i lubed up the saddle rails so much, my saddle slid back all the way.

It washes out. Vaseline does not

Always wash them (see T'aint thread for what happens when you don't).
Never dry them.

I'm very familiar with that thread--thanks for reminding me! :)
No drying-got it!

Would you say you're intimately familiar with that thread?

I wash AND dry them every time and have no problems. Too lazy to hang them.

I have some pairs of Pearl Izumi bike shorts that I wash and dry everytime. The care instructions tag says that I can dry them on low.

You might want to look for that little tag and see what your shorts are telling you. They might not like the dryer.

Too funny. No, totally not "intimately" familiar. But that is funny.

I just prefer my taint to be sore free, especially in this heat and humidity we have been having here. Nothing like cooling menthol down there.

Its personal preference. When i spend $150 on something I want it to last as long as possible. I don't dry my jeans either, but the tags say I can.

Certainly your choice, I would never spend $150 on my shorts though--$60 yes ( I will drop $600 on a handbag so no, I am not a tightwad) and I mostly wear tri shorts. Have a great saddle and don't need to spend that kind of money on them. The bike shorts I have , have lasted YEARS with no problems. With 2 of us doing multiple workouts a day and a minimum of a load of wash a day I am not wasting time hanging crap.

Was just saying that you dont have to hang them since that was the original issue.

With real bike shorts...the kind with chamois leather...I've never dryed them. Makes 'em crack and become hard. Treat'em well with chamois butter or bag balm and they're fine. In fact when ALL bike shorts came with leather you'd coat 'em with butter, put 'em on and make sure there was a nice sticky fit to your crotch before riding so there would be no chaffing. The "other" shorts with a synthetic pad...I'm with Britt...wash and dry.

I didn't know that...thanks!
Are those even sold anymore?

Not generally, which is a real shame. Here's a place:
http://www.kucharikclothing.com/
that makes them with "Genuine Chamois". And that's what you're looking for. Most of the big firms,
Descente, Assos, Craft, Castelli, have gone to synthetics. On their web sites, they simply are not clear as to what the pads are made of. I Own some Castelli and they feel like real leather...but real leather doesn't come in neon green! I'll keep looking and if I find something I'll get back to you.

I do wash mine and hang to dry. It saves a little money on electricity and they dry fast.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Doesn't everyone hang all tri gear after washing?

I just go with the directions on the clothes, unless I had bad luck doing that before, in which case I hang stuff. Running clothes (yay Target!) seem fine with drying. Biking stuff hangs.
