If I don't dock the unit, when I turn it on, it shows the previous workout data. I want to keep that data but I want to start a fresh workout. How do I do it?

I can't find it in the manual. Anyone?

Hold the "Lap/Reset" button for 3 seconds. It will show a little countdown like "resetting in 3..2..1". But, don't worry, resetting doesn't erase anything. It basically just starts a new workout.

+1 Once you reset it, go to History and you can review your workouts.

Another question. I dont think the watch is waterproof, should i worry about being out in the rain? It was coming down hard today while i was out riding, i was just wondering.

It should be ok in rain (well, at least the kind of rain we get in Southern CA ;))... I know the 301 has a little cover for the docking port, so I make sure that is in place. And I have covered it in saran wrap just in case before.

It's actually water resistant, but just not to very deep (1 meter). So you should actually have any problem submerging it in shallow water. I think the problem you can run into when swimming is the constant smacking the water when you are swimming (or flailing like me). My brother has swam with is before, and he hasn't had any problems, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I think there's a time limit as well. I seem to recall something about submergible up to 1 meter but only for 30 minutes.

The actual Garmin spec says:

Most newer Garmin® GPS units are waterproof in accordance with IEC 60529 IPX7. IEC 60529 is a European system of test specification standards for classifying the degrees of protection provided by the enclosures of electrical equipment. An IPX7 designation means the GPS case can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. An IPX8 designation is for continuous underwater use.

However, the instructions explicitly say do not swim with it. The accidental immersion means just dropping... not all the motions of swimming. A friend with a 305 (as a beta tester) tested the swimming part, and yup, a half IM swim killed it.

However, I think some rain should fall under the IPX7 -- but to be safe you could always send off an email to Garmin customer support. They have always been very helpful.

I have another question about the 305. Actually a problem, because when I transfer my data to my computer to the Garmin Training Center, it doubles some of my workouts. It makes a day in March 2007 (I bought it in march 08) where it puts all of my bike rides into one ride, each ride as a lap. It's pretty annoying when I want to see my totals for this year. It also sometimes does it to some of my multisport events, where it duplicates them every time I load the Garmin. So I have one event 5-6 times. Am I doing something wrong?

Weird... I don't use the Garmin Training Center (found it fairly useless compared to the webbased versions like Motionbased (soon to be Garmin Connect). But if it is consistent issue I'd say send off an email to Garmin support -- they really are helpful :)

That issue to me, sounds like time to contact support and make sure your 305 has the latest software. That sounds like an incompatibility between TC and the FR, which might be caused by earlier ops software on the FR itself.

Ya, but its a little awkward. You can record a session as a multisport session by just changing sports in the middle. Hold the bottom left button and change sports. It will record that session as a multisport session. Only thing I don't like is that you can't then analyze in Training Center the individual legs against other bike or run legs etc.
