Hey everyone,

This is my first season doing triathlons (so far I've done an olympic and half IM). My half IM was the Ironman 70.3 Eagleman this past Sunday in Cambridge, MD and it was really hot and really humid (mid-90's w/ dew points in the 70's). I'm pretty good about developing my nutrition plan as I train, but there was no way to plan for these conditions since most of my training was completed during the spring. The heat and humidity was predicted a few days before the race, so I started hydrating a couple of days before the race. Everyone was telling us to hydrate as much as possible while on the bike. While on the bike, I drank 6 24 oz bottles (2 Accelerade, 2 Gatorade, and 2 water) . Is this way too much? Is it possible to stay ahead of dehydration when it is this hot? The reason I ask is that during the run, which was completely in the sun, I started to dehydrate and my run was a lot slower than I was hoping.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

On a day like last Sunday at Eagleman (heat index at 113 degrees), a 160 lb athlete should be targeting close to 38-40 oz per hour to combat lost fluids via sweating. Another good proxy for successful hydration is urinating about 1X per hour. If you are not at this frequency, you are most likely dehydrated.

Enduralytes.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.
