Pac Crest Racers: Cold Water warning
Hopefully we get some warm weather going so that it warms up quick. I am not doing it this year but have done it in the past and water temps were in the low 60's. Seems like we have been having alot of issues with cold water here in the Northwest. The snow has stuck around alot longer than it has in the past and has been making for some brutal racing conditions. Good luck to anyone doing the race.
And also, if anyone needs a recomendation on neoprene booties, I got a pair of Blue-Seventy swim socks for the Boise HIM and they worked great. Would highly recommend for the $30.
What's up with all the cold water tris? I'm seeing a trend.
I am frightened ! I have a sleeveless wetsuit I was going to wear....may break down and rent a full suit. UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
This also brings up trauma deciding what to wear for the REST of the race.
Central Oregon can be brutal with the weather. I did Pac. Crest last year and setting up on race moring it was below freezing, I actually had to get frost off of my bike that sat out over night. Typically even thought it can be cold in the morning, it will warm up by mid day, but that leaves you with either being overdressed and burning up by the end of the day or freezing when you come out of the water. I would suggest getting a pair of arm warmers and taking them off when you need to.
Yeah I know there was frost on the ground in the morning. Hey---those booties, are they like ones you would wear for SCUBA? I have those, but they have a plastic bottom on them for when your feet are in your fins. Does not seem like they would work too well.
I haven't gone scuba diving at all so I don't really know what they are like, but I would say that they are most likely not like that. I think that they are 1.5 mm neoprene and the sole of the "sock" has little rubber balls or beads on it (like the fancy winter socks my wife wears inside). They were very form fitting and kept my feet nice and toasty. Plus I was able run up the concrete trail to transition much faster and more comfortably than in the past with the socks on.
cool!~ Thanks!!!!
The cold water trends we're seeing is due to global warming.

I went with my Team in Training team to Wickiup last weekend to camp out and practice swimming, biking, and running on the course. I'll just give you a heads up here: the water temperature was 52 degrees, and that was the shallow and "warm" part, it got colder as you swam away from shore. It was ice-cream headache cold, freeze-your-lips so we couldn't talk when we got out cold, cold enough to freeze your ears so that your balance was affected as you tried to stand up out of the water. Cold! Snow was on the hills behind us, just a few hundred feet up.
I would recommend neoprene caps and possibility booties if you're a cold feet kind of person. My feet were numb when we got out.
Other than that, the course is lovely, and it's nice to have the old bike course back. More details and photos are on my blog this week.
