I ordered some new wheels yesterday. Right now I have a low end Shimano Sora 8 speed casette on my wheel, and wanted to get a new casette so that I don't have to change back and forth all the time. Is there any way to change my shifters to work with a 9 speed casette? I do not have bar end shifters, just the road bike style.

Also is all Shimano compatable? I was thinking of upgrading to a 105, because nobody that I can find seems to sell Sora components?

Cheers.

For your first question, im not sure. I know stuff made for a 9 speed will work with an 8 speed cassette, but i imagine there could be issues going the other way around.

Second question, yes. My bike is a mishmash of different level shimano parts from sora up to dura ace. I dont think any 2 parts of my drivetrain are the same level and it all works together just fine.

You can't make 8-speed shifters work with a 9-speed cassette, unless you don't want to use one of the gears. They're indexed to shift a specific amount. So, unless you want to get a new shifter and a new derailleur, then you're stuck with 8-speed. You can go the other way though, because you just set the limiter screws to allow 8 gears instead of 9, but I guess that's not really your question.

I'd look online, and try ebay, to find sora components. You should be able to find anything you might need. Here's one I found . Also, if you're just looking for a cassette, you could always get a Tiagra or 105 8-speed cassette. Tiagra was 8-speed until a few years ago, and 105 was 8-speed back in the 90's.

As far as the cassette goes, you can get spacers to go from 10-speed to 9-speed or 9-speed to 8-speed, but you can't really go the other way because that part of the hub isn't wide enough.

Lastly, you can definitely interchange different levels of shimano stuff, as long as they're all designed for the same number of gears (front and back).
