I finished the 100 mile ride I set out to do this weekend (Saturday). Around mile 75 my calf was cramping and I had to walk it off every third or so mile. Now it is extremely tender and sore. What should be my appoach to treating the injury and resuming training? How can I prevent this from happening next time. I was hydrated and as soon as the cramping started I ate banannas but the cramping continued.

Thanks!

Sounds like overuse---is a 100 mile ride common for you or was this a long distance/first time ride? You might have had all the electrolytes you needed, but your muscle was torn up a bit from either the ride or exercise that preceded it. Whatever the case, I'd recommend salt tabs instead of bananas next time. Also, you might want to score a calf compression sleeve (I like the Bioskin one).

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

The distance covered was substantially longer than any other attempted this year. How long before the ride do I start taking salt tabs? How long do they stay in your system?

I use thermolyte for my electrolyte tab of choice.
I take 2 about every hour if it is realy hot.

Nothing to it, but to do it
