hey, gotta seriously stuck carbon seat post in aluminum seat tube. I am soaking it in wd40 and can turn it but not pull it...anyone with idea's, hook me up! My better half is simply laughing about the concept of buying a new bike cause I can't raise my seatpost...If I get it working, I can sell the ride and get a new one so lots at stake!
We have tried:
lube and turning
sitting on it and pulling full force

Not sure what's next cause I am a short ass and it's in pretty deep, maybe 2-3 inches sticking out.

Thanks gang!

I'm not an expert on carbon and aluminum, so maybe this has no relevance. I did hear a trick on how to move the crank on a car that has seized up from sitting for a long time. Instead of putting lots force on the crank at once, you apply less force, but over a long time. Attach a bar for leverage, then put a cinder block at the end of the bar. The result is a fair amount of pressure that you can leave on it for a few days.

No idea how to apply that to your situation. I'm picturing a bike hanging by the seat, and something attached to the bottom of the frame with 80 pounds of weight attached to it.

Also, use P.B. Blast instead of WD40. It's not made to be a lube like WD40, it's made to get in small areas in order to loosen it up. Good luck.

There was an article about this in last month's "Bicycling" magazine... I forget what it said, but if you can dig it up, it might be able to help? Also, tried a call to the LBS?

I think the article was written by a wrench who said it is their least favorite problem to deal with, and that it took them a few days of taking turns beating on it to get it unstuck. I would take it to your LBS.

I had this happen too with an Alu frame and carbon seat post. I took it to the LBS and the solution was banging on the rails on the underside of the saddle with a large rubber mallet. YMMV.

You might want to try something besides WD-40. WD-40 is NOT a LUBRICANT. It is meant to remove moisture (look at the MSDS).

You cold try PJT's rubber mallet solution. Don't know if you could risk cracking the seat post, but at this point, does that really matter? Any other solution I am thinking of is really elaborate, and probably doesn't really solve anything, or make it any easier.

+1 for actual lubricant and force/time, just be prepared for when the bike falls in the middle of the night and scares the crap out of you ;-)

If you're feeling particularly destructive you could try heating the aluminum to expand it. The seat post may not survive particularly well, but it'd be a cathartic exercise. ;-D

Actually, I went to "backstage" theater school, and I had an extremely neurotic rigging professor who knows everything there is to know about random, pointless trivia. Some of his facts, however, do come in handy when people wonder why WD-40 isn't lubricating x item properly... then I tell them, well... it's because it's not a lubricant.

I found the "history" of the product/company (what TriSooner was talking about) at their website... http://www.wd40company.com/about/history/

Heat the aluminum with a hair dryer on hot and it should expand enough to get your seat tube out. It will take a minute, there is plenty of heat that needs to go into the metal before it gets hot enough.

The hair dryer wont damage anything, but the twisting you have already done may have ruined your carbon post. Twisting carbon is a no-no because it scratches.

Also - if you try the "hang it with a weight attached method - Trying hanging the bike upside down with the weight attached to the seat. That way, if and when it comes out in the middle of the night, the only thing headed to the floor is the seat, not the bike...

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

Okay so I am not using WD 40, I just stuckt hat in there cause I didn't know the name of what I was using. I am using Robson lubricant. I currently have my bike hung upside down with a duffel bag full of wood and kitty litter hanging off an old beat up mtb saddle I put on it. It's been there overnight with minimal change. I am going to try the hair dryer thing tonite. Should I do that iwth it upside down? That might eleviate scratching and just haul 'er outta there. I am nearly at the destructive point...

Bicycling article: http://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6610,s1-5-30-17162-1,00.html

They mentioned that usually they just need to hacksaw it out of there. :)

One additional thing they did was take apart the bottom bracket, and spray some lube up in the riser tube. That may help with additional lubing. But, it doesn't sound like it's an issue with lubing, since you can spin it around, but just not get it out.

I'd also get more weight on it than wood and kitty litter. That's probably about 50 lbs? Then also try the hair dryer.

It would be fun, but tie the bike to 2 vehicles and pull it apart that way. At some point, something will have to give! :) Hopefully it's the seat post! :)

lol, you wanna come up and drive the other vehicle? We could be famous on youtube! I agree on the lube thing as it is moving, just not he right direction! I am heading home to see if it's worked out any further and add some more weight. I read that same article today actually. I am getting sick of riding my mountain bike with aero bars, so need some results.
My LBS is a hockey shop that sells 4 Giant mountain bikes a year so I am sticking with my own basement.
Thanks for all the tips! I am still not quite ready for hacksaw hell, but am getting closer...

Yep watch the warnings on the heat. Also can it go in slightly farther, some times just a little inward motion will get the Lube to the point that is binding.

Also found the following links:

Personally like these guys solution. Tree and a four wheel drive vehicle, works every time.

Well, she's still hanging upside down int he basement with a bag of wood splits, 3 x 15kg bags of kitty litter, a Dremel kit, and a vacuum cleaner tied aboard (I have no concrete blocks). She has moved 2 mm. She has no ingrown hairs, no taint's and although not a woody, might be considered a bit stiff...tonite's agenda includes a hair dryer on the frame and an ice pack on the seat post (from the velonews link) and a rubber mallet. How long should I hang the poor thing before I rev up the truck and the winch??! I do need to get a pic of her current state, pretty entertaining.

It's amazing how when a certain few get involved in an innocent seatpost thread that the ingrown hair is immediately mentioned!

If the weighted bike trick doesn't work, try running an iron rod thru the seat railng tubes long enough to stick out 4-6" both sides, wedge it in towards the front of the tubes. enlist the help of your better half, 2 hard rubber mallets if you have them-regular hammers would prolly also work- and a 3rd person off the street to hold down the bike. Hammer up on the rod in unison until, hopefully, it loosens.

Might work, might not, but it's sure better than dealing with an ingrown hair.

She doesn't have a taint? I thought all bikes had taints. It's the part below the bottom bracket. T'aint quite the chain stay, t'aint quite the down tube.

Okay update!!! It's almost out!! I put ice on the post and heat on the tube and dumped a sh*tload of lube down the downtube. Then I got out the hammer....I have gotten her about halfway out and had to stop to go swimming. I left her with the various assorted hanging products, and ice pack and a heating pad. Progress!! Now I just have to find a new seatpost somewhere in the middle of nowhere! Cross your fingers and ingrown hairs for me!

No luck. I am now the proud owner of a pipe wrench. We can move it within a 5 inch distance, but then it sticks solid about halfway out. I have an antique car guy friend helping me. We are soaking it in lawnmower oil now and going back at twisting and hammering this evening. I am dangerously close to ordering a new bike and signing the divorce papers....

OK - So here's an idea:

Drill a 1/4 in hole through the seat tube
Buy a small solid steel rod about 12 inches long
Insert rod through the hole
Ice the seat post
Heat the tube
Twist, pull, yank, hit with mallets
Maybe that could give you the extra leverage you'd need?.?

Next idea involves a car battery, some sulfuric acid, a wench and a pulley system and begins with the phrase "I'm about to go medieval on your a$$"

And yes, a picture of the bike hanging with the small hardware store hanging from the seat is an absolute must. More like a moral imperative.

Last thought: Just because this sounds like its in need of very out of the ordinary course thoughts... Have you tried somehow lifting the small hardware store you currently have hanging from the bike and letting said stuff drop, yanking on the tube that way? Of course, you should run, run, run away as soon as you let go, or in fact, have a neighbor do the work while you run the video camera...

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

I don't know why you're not tying it to a tree and pulling it with your car, especially if you're considering getting a new bike. Anyways, I'm still waiting for a pic of your mini hardware store you have hanging from it.
