Total body resistance training?
I've always interpreted strength training to include free weights and/or circuit machines with focus on exercises that will benefit your swimming, biking and running. Joe Friel's, Triathlete's Training Bible has a great section on strength training, a must for your triathlon library.
In general the circuit machines will do the trick at the gym: chest, shoulders, legs, rows, etc; ex: lat pulls are great for swimming. Free weights will give you a more muscle specific workout. Band exercises will allow you to take your workout anywhere you go. If you're not familiar with general weight training and if you belong to a gym, hang out, watch and ask questions, most people will be glad to help out.
Your focus should be working toward higher reps not higher weights. Start out with a comfortable setting or free weight size and build the reps slowly until you move to the next weight. Number of trips to the gym should be outlined in your plan.
Have a great workout!
I agree that strength training has a broad range of interpretations.
I consider strength training push ups some resistance bands, and resistance machine circuit.
It works for me.
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
I've been doing kettle bells lately. We used to have them when I was a kid and now they are "new" again. (Null ubi sub sol...nothing new under the sun.) They're Russian and came into wide use in 1913.
One wicked workout and total body. I get blasted in 30 minutes. My effort to get away from machines....
"A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men."
I bet what that training plan meant was for you to do a strength routine that hits every muscle in your body. There are a number of ways to do that.
I tried to attach a template for my total body strength routine. It's a modification of an old PNF routine I found somewhere sometime. PM me with email address and I can send it to you if you like.
However, now I've beefed it up by adding a solid abs/core routine, and that is posted here: http://www.trifuel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6572
I've used this model for about 6 years now, and I feel really strong from it.
Thanks for all of the responses. I have weight trained before so that will be easy to accomplish; I would like to try that total body strength routine, too. Thanks!

I posted about a week ago on how to train for a sprint triathlon. I have been following the training program found on http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon-training/Sprint-Triathlon-Training.php, and am loving it! Notably, my swimming is starting to feel more fluid, as I am adding in extra days for building technique and getting used to the breathing.
On each Day 5 practice, it says "Strength", which at the bottom refers to "Total body resistance training". I googled it, and came up with everything from band exercises to running in the pool. What is it referring to exactly? How do I perform this exercise?
Thanks!
