retirement after a very short carrer !
Ernie...you rock! You can control your life or you can let your life control you. You see it here all the time. Folks who are way too wrapped up in it all, to the exclusion of so much else. If it isn't fun...then do things that are fun and you enjoy. Competition isn't for everyone and I understand your feelings...It's not for me...I go to races because they are fun...and don't give a rats ass how I did in my AG. (the old hippie in me) Who knows...one day you might feel good enough about it all to "jump in."
Don't be a stranger...and just because you don't "compete" doesn't mean you don't have something to offer.

I'm with you, Erine - sort of.
I am training for a 1/2 Iron distance race and the commitment has had me whining on more than one occasion. Then I lost almost 15 pounds and managed to climb 3800 ft on the bike so I'm not whining so much but I still have no intention of training like this ever again. I will still race because it is fun but I'm not very competitive (what Anton wrote sounds like something I'd say) so all I have to do is swim, bike and run for fun and toss a little sprinting work in and voilà! - I'm ready for an Oly.
I do get what you mean, though. I miss just riding on the weekend for the heck of it and I really look forward to getting back to that.

Thanks for the replies, today I went for a bike ride.. felt weird not being straped to the heart rate monitor for the first time in a while... felt good ! Looking forward to swimming on tuesday night with the masters.
Linke Anton said, I might want to do another triathlon eventually.
Don't worry, I'll still be coming here once in a while !
Ernie
Good for you. I'm pretty sure that I couldn't keep exercising if I didn't have the races to look forward to. People talk about how the races are the rewards and fun for all the hard training, but not for me. They hurt! If I could keep my motivation to keep in shape without racing, I would.
thats all fine and good for you all but i want to be THE MAN!
seriously though i fell into this in a not so wierd way. my son was getting faster than me on the bike and really the only goal oriented achievement possible on the bike for a washed up 43 year old is local races. i thought since race across america didnt require team sponsers and such i might go that route, but found you have to have like a ten man team and two cars, making it logistically almost impossible .
but with triathlon i have the goals to do olympic this july a half next year then a fulll ironman the following year. i'd like to say, or be able to say that i accomplished it. i am not concerned much with winning (unless it is to qualify).

After a short carrer with 1 duathlon ... I have decided to retire from competing.
As all of you know, training for triathlon is very time consuming for the last 3 months I have trained hard and made amazing gain in my physical condition but I realized last week that everything that I was doing was around triathlon and it's not me. I started not having fun training, I want to go run, bike and swim because I like those things and not always with a plan to run 5k in 20 min and ride 30 k with intervals...
I will keep on doing all 3, I loved swimming with the masters and really enjoy the running and I've biked all my life but I won't be competing.
I want to enjoy a few beers the saturday night and not rest all day because I have a race the sunday! I don't want to feel bad because I missed a training session.
I guess it's my free spirit snowboarding background that is coming out !
Thanks for the help and all the intresting reading I have done here on trifuel !
