Racing without a saddle bag?

I did my first tri last weekend and saw a bunch of people racing without a saddle bag. They had one of those things where they can screw in 2 CO2 cartridges and fit two bottles behind their seat. What are those things called? Do you guys recommend that, or should I stick with the saddle bag?

In retrospect I wish I had looked closer, because I don't remember seeing any spare tubes, tire levers, or a CO2 inflator back there. I guess you could just put those in your jersey pockets though, right? What do you guys do?

If you don't need it for the extra bottles, I believe there are ones where it is just the attachments. But personally, I just leave the saddle bag on. However, my saddle bag is tiny and only has exactly what I'd need for a flat in it.

My fiance races with no bag or flat stuff in a sprint: he is super speedy and his goal at smaller races is a win, so if he flatted his goal would be gone. I would still want to finish if I flatted.

I have been racing with the bag, but was considering getting something like the x-wing (I think that is what it is called). That way I could take off my two water bottle cages and move everything to the back. I hear this improves airflow.

Does anyone have any pointers about good, light, small, cheap CO2 set ups? Right now I have a mini-pump attached to my frame, but am looking to slim down on stuff attached to my bike.

The one I have is by X-Lab. Here's a link it a pic of it (http://www.xlab-usa.com/flat_wing.html).

It holds 2 Water bottles (cages not included).
With the "X-Nut" you can hold 2 CO2, an inflator.
With a pair of straps you can hold 2 tubes or 1 tire (you can attach up to 2 pair of straps)

As for the tire levers, I just throw a pair in my jersey for the bike ride.

I agree that if you don't need the extra bottles then keep the bag. I go through a lot of water on my rides so I like to have the extra capacity.

Wow D...just checked out their site. Pricey stuff! But it looks like it gets the job done...sleek too. Thanks.

Nope... bottles behind are not very aero. They can be, if placed exactly right, but to be sure on placement takes basically wind tunnel time. In general the behind the seat placement makes the aerodynamics worse. However, if you really really need the extra hydration (nothing on course or available on training rides) then it is worth it since it doesn't matter how aero you are if you are too dehydrated to pedal.

But they don't wear out and you'll only buy one.

It's totally personal, up to you and your goals. I normally don't have one on for sprints, but do for anything else, always on for training rides...

I personally love it. One problem I did have with it was having bottles shake out of the cages. I bought some "Bat Cages" by Trek I think, and I haven't had the problem since.
