It's official....
Eating a few gallons of ice cream every week for a few months will add a nice thick layer of fat, which will help with staying warm.
buy a wetsuit today online with overnight delivery or go to the local tri shop tommorrow or Saturday then go swimming
Finishing the race is the only thing that validates the cause.
No local tri shop....the only thing we have is Dick's Sporting Goods which is useless. They didn't even know what a racing belt was. Guess I better get started on some ice cream. :)

Its supposed to be 78 on the day of the race though, so maybe it won't be so bad.

Damnit...I was hoping someone was going to tell me that 55 really isn't thhaaat cold.

It isn't cold....for running, or skiiing, or playing cricket....
Yeah thanks a lot! :) Well wetsuitrentals.com can't help me out...so I guess I'm out of luck. Who does next day shipping?

Renting - not sure. If you are buying, most of the online retail stores will ship overnight. Just click one of the sponsored links on here.
While you are at it, 55-degree temps might also call for a 'squid lid' (neoprene cap). But how long is the swim? If it is 500m or so, just do it. You would look so hard core without a suit.
Any tips on staying warm without a wet suit?
Sprint the entire swim ;)
Definate second on the extra swim cap or neoprene cap. May want ear plugs as well just to keep the temperature differential out of your ears, if you don't already wear them. The biggest thing will be just to keep moving, keep the heat flowing...
"Care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think is safe, dream more than others think is practical, expect more than others think is possible."
Amen to the second swim cap. If you have any type of tri tops, layer them up as well. I went out for a lake swim at about that temp and it was pretty miserably cold. TriSooner is right about looking hard core...maybe also a little senile or demented...but that can be a good intimidator as well.

haha....i put my foot in the water and it was cold, but not horrible. I did a polar bear swim in the Alps once. Now that was cold. It's a half mile swim, I think I might just suck it up.

You are officially tougher than I. I wear my wetsuit in the shower to stay warm.
Wow I'm a wuss about cold water! I even worried it would be cold at non-wetsuit races where the water was too warm to allow it... and I swim in a like 82+ degree pool and sometimes think it is cold ;) Best of luck crazyhead (and I mean that it a supportive, positive way).

Your nutz I was cold in 55 degree water with a sleeveless wetsuit on. I say get a wetsuit becuase the cold is going to stop all your motivation; unless you love really really cold water. Plus this being your first open water swim you don't want to have a bad expereince. So I say get going on that rental wetsuit; where is the tri?
If no suit; then buy that squid lid; maybe use some vasoline; pound some icecream (joking) and keep moving; during the first few strokes I wouldn't rush things. With water temp like that there will be a "in the water start" so you will get use to it...lol

Yeah, you did not say how far the swim is. 500 and you will be ok, if its 2.4 miles then you are crazy :)
Ummm.... that's cold without a suit. But think of it this way... if you get too cold, you'll get a free ride in a helicopter or ambulance.

If by free you mean really expensive in a helicopter!!

Do they charge you for it? Bummer... to the OP... get a wetsuit, I think it's going to be cheaper.

Yeah. I believe my nice little ride was something over $8000 for using out the helicopter, and then there was a fuel charge. I think it came to around $10,000 all said and done. Insurance can cover some or all of it -- but that depends on your insurance. I'm not sure how it would work at a race, since then I'd think it would be race insurance, and I'm not sure what coverage that has for those things.

Ok I ordered a wetsuit from Xterra. My husband was not pleased, but I don't seem him signing up to swim in 55 degree water. I think I just got robbed in overnight shipping charges.

but you'll think it is worth it! Hope the suit helps make alllll your dreams come true :D

haha....yes it will be worth it. I figured it was better then him having to visit me in the emergency room. Plus I've got another race in 2 weeks that I can use it in. What's the usual cutoff temperature for using a wetsuit? Maybe I can use it in my August race as well....this is New England.

USAT rules state that competitors may wear wetsuits if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower.
USAT rules also state that if the water temperature is between 78.1 - 83.9 degrees, competitors may wear wetsuits but will not be eligible for awards.
If the water temperature is 84 degrees or above, participants may not wear wetsuits.

It's a good idea that you bought a wetsuit, especially in your first open water swim.
I did the Triple-T without a wetsuit, and the biggest mistake me and my buddy did, was to swim in the suit we were racing in, and I heard many other saying the same. So just to disagree with someone above, who mentioned putting on a couple of shirts or suit, don't if you don't have a wet-suit. If you do the cold will follow you for at least half the bike ride, which isn't fun.
Good luck, though

You will never see no-wetsuits allowed in a New England Tri. The water temp never gets that high even in august.

Obviously not an Al Gore believer...
in Houston we are lucky if the water temp is below 80 degrees from may to october

Got the wetsuit....but ummm how am I supposed to breath? I'm def not a fan of turtlenecks.

you won't regret having it.
Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left

Did you get in the water with it on yet? They are *wet*suits, and the water helps them actually fall into place on you. I find mine is most comfortable if I get in the water, let some water in the neck, and then stand and let the water drain out. The suit falls into place, and fits MUCH more comfortably. If I don't have time for that just make sure as you get in you let some water in the neck and the suit will get into place as you start.

be sure to lube up the typical hot spots with body glide..you just never know if a new suit is going to be perfect or what....so:
all around the neck
back of the armpits...that whole edge from your lats up to your arms
transition area of top of the abs to your chest (this might be men only sans shirt)
ankles
around the back of the knees
Where do I get body glide? I've been looking around for it, but haven't been able to find any.

You can get bodyglide at EMS;REI and City Sports you must have 1 of those near you. Put the body glide around your neck and places where you think the wetsuit might give you a rash. The most common is the dreaded back of the neck burn.
You will not regret getting the wetsuit.
Lube up liberally with bodyglide or chammy butter on your neck and other chafe points.
Also before you step in, put a plastic grocery bag on each foot, then step in and it will help your foot slide thru the leg opening.
Good Luck!!

Pac Grove Tri has been 55 to 56 and usually there is a guy who will do the race with no wet suit! Not sure I would though. Crazy.... How was the race?
It was great! Glad I had the wetsuit, even though it wasn't quite as cold as it was supposed to be.

...I've lost it. I just signed up for another triathlon this weekend with an open water swim and the water temperature is currently 55 degrees. First of all I don't own a wet suit and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to find one by Sunday and second of all I'm actually looking forward to it. Any tips on staying warm without a wet suit?
