Buffalo Springs 70.3 - anybody in it?
It will be hot, windy, AND sunny! VERY challenging 8 different climbs (esp. the first one out of the water - bye bye oxygen!!!) Run has about 3 hills and a very long flat out in the open. VERY challenging race, but a great sense of accomplishment afterward. God bless in your race!
P.S. On the run, there is an area where they wash you down w/ a water hose - i recommend walking there!

My husband and I are driving down from Illinois to do the race. I'm a little worried about the heat, it's been a cool, wet spring here and not the ususal 90 degree temps we get from May 1.

I always have a headlamp in my transition bag, you never know how dark the TA will be when you get there!
I have seen the hills in my college days, and they aint pretty
Girlfriend driving! Me and my buddy... sleeping.

At least it is just hot and DRY... 20% humidity is awesome. I used to ride my bike to class in the summer, and not sweat a drop.
Parking to the transition area is a very long walk in the dark, so bring a flashlight. Start your bike in the smallest chain ring because T1 goes straight uphill after only about 100meters.
+1 ---
I didn't have my headlamp with me, and stepped in a giant hole in the parking area while carrying my bike and bag. My leg was in all the way up to my knee. Other than annoyance there was no harm done there.
The hill out of T1 is real. Get your bike in an appropriate gear as you are setting up in transition. There are some great twisty hills that were tons of fun. I actually had a PR on the bike on that course. Great stuff. I will say though, the road surface is cruddy! Even with a carbon frame and good wheels the whacky sealed stone surface (or whatever it is) it gets to you after a while and you'll be ready to get off the bike. There are some chunky sections of the road too. So batten down the waterbottles and tire maintenance gear very well. Ther was lots of debris on the course last year. Including my entire tire change kit.
The run was really hot, but aid stations were frequent and well stocked with ice and stuff. As another poster has said there are some hills that will be a bit tough on the run. But the "Energy Lab 2" in the middle of the run is pancake flat. So you do get a chance to get a good rhythm there.
Oh and for the swim, you start by standing in really shallow water and then running along until you can start swimming. That was a little different for me. I also got really warm on the swim because I wore my full wetsuit. You Texas peeps probably only where sleeveless suits though, so you'll probably be good there.
The Greer's do put on a great event. If you get an age group award they had some buffalo sculpture things (good desk ornaments), and get this, wine. Seriously. I got a bottle of Cap Rock Merlot with a spiffy Buffalo Springs Ironman 70.3 label on it. I'm sure the wine isn't great, but it is kind of a fun alternative reminder/souvenier of the race.
Have fun out there! Let us know how it goes!
As far as wetsuits go... I only own a sleeveless! There isn't any water here that goes below the upper 50's probably, not even below 60.
There is nothing wrong with the Cap Rock winery. West Texas grows some good grapes actually.
23 days to go. I hope I can manage one of those awards! We will see when the time comes if I can hold it together.
Good luck to everyone racing! I am Lubbock bound in the morning.
I did well all things considered. Came in at 5:18:52, which was faster than my goal of 5:30.
Got passed on the run so I came in 2nd in Clydesdale 19-39. I am planning on a little RR when I get some free time.
The rain on the bike was not fun.... sideways rain, stinging rain, heavy rain... but at least it wasn't hot!
That's a smoking clydesdale time...I hope I can come close to that next year in one of my HIMs
Thanks JSK! You can get there, it just takes lots and lots of work.
I forgot my splits
Swim 27:39
Bike 2:47:58
Run 1:58:02
I am sitting at my desk with an ice pack strapped to my quads at the moment. GOSH I am sore.
Last year the winning Clyde was like 5:30 something, so I thought for sure I won, until I was getting my gear in transition and this other guy told me I must have had a really fast bike/run because my bike was the only one racked when he came in... i asked if he passed me on the run, and he said yep. he beat me by 9 minutes.

So, pending the entry of a buddy of mine, I am all set to sign up for this race on a whim. I figure that I am currently in the best shape I have ever been in, and I don't know when I will get another chance. I am more of a spur of the moment guy.
I know its going to be hot, and windy, uhh and sunny (I did live in Lubbock for 5 of the best years of my life).
So, that being said, anybody else signed up yet?
Anybody done it who has words of wisdom? Cue TriSooner in 5...4...3...
Gotta say I am very much looking forward to drinking a beer and cooling off in the lake.
For anyone who IS going, we are driving from Dallas on Friday morning, and going home Sunday after the race.
