Wetsuit Question- yes another one.
Wetsuit fit is sorta like bike fit -- people find one and swear by it, but it just doesn't always work for other people. A couple I'd check out if I was in the market: BlueSeventy and Xterra. Find a place where you can try them on and see.
As for the kick, I'm not by any means a swimmer but I have heard that especially for IM and half IM you don't really want to kick a lot -- having a wetsuit keep your position without needing the kick is a good thing, as you'll be using your legs plenty once you are out of the water.
I have a zoot synergy that surprised me with its range of motion in the shoulders. I went in to get a sleeveless but a zoot rep who was in the store recommended I try a full suit as there is no reason not to other than poor shoulder rotation. I tried it on and had no problems with my range of motion. Plus it has paneling in the chest and hips with thinner sections that allow for better chest expansion and leg kick.
Some of your problems with losing speed in a wetsuits could be due to a poor fit allowing for increased drag. Or if you are drafting on someone in your full IM you can expect to gain a bit of speed over swimming solo. I got my suit a size smaller than recommended by the sizing charts in order to cut down on loose areas and because I was at the very bottom of the weight range. A looser suit will actually hinder your shoulder motion so make sure the chest size is right for you and don't worry about sleeve or leg length. I look like a 12 year old kid who just hit a 7" growth spurt. Ready for the spring flooding.
Thanks for the thoughts. I hope to be able to get the Helix as that is supposedly the best one for people who are swimmers first.
I actually wasn't drafting off of anyone at my iron-distance. I was first out of the water by a couple minutes...actually did the swim in just under 59 minutes and got so excited when I checked my watch out of the water, I lost sight of the timing mat and had to run around to find it!! HA! I was shocked! CRAZINESS!!!

Sorry to have to pose this question, as I'm sure it has been asked before:
I have been swimming all my life. 27+ years. I am more comfortable NOT in a wetsuit. I feel like my kick is hindered in a wetsuit. I currently have a sleeveless, so the shoulders aren't too much of a problem.
We have determined that the wetsuit I currently have is just not working for me. Heck, my 1/2 iron split (2 loop course, husband timed) for my iron swim is faster than my 1/2 iron swim in a wetsuit by some time! It is infuriating!
SOOOOOO.... need some opinions from some other fishies out there...which do you prefer as far as allowing the most movement in your hips? Blue Seventy Helix?
Thanks....I am just frustrated and need some guidance.
