Pins and Needles
Try not to focus on the numbers... especially when you haven't done the race before. Different races... different times.
Sounds like a circulation issue but I'm not a doctor.

"Pins and Needles" are usually due to 1 of 2 things. Circulation issues or nerve issues. Both can be temporary due to something getting "pinched" or squeezed - often by a muscle that is "spasming". Once the muscle relaxes, everything goes back to normal. Try some over the counter pain reliever and see if that helps. If it lasts longer than a day or so - see a Dr. That means something is getting squeezed and not being released. It might require a higher dose of muscle relaxing or any number of other things.
My guess - and I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV - is that with a stress fracture in your left foot, you compensated for it by running differently on your right foot and threw something off.

Sounds like a nerve being impinged...oh, and I'd give up a lot to be able to do an HIM in 5:21!
Disappointing is a matter of perspective...

Well, the doctor said it doesn't look like stress fracture-just inflamed tendons in my left foot. The pins and needles in my right foot did go away after about 3 miles so it probably does have to do with me favoring it- causing me to run differently on my right. My laces are elastic so I think that shouldn't be a problem.
Yeah. It is definitely my perspective but for my goals, 5:21 was disappointing. Someone I know always used to say "man, I did so horribly at that race. My time was terrible" and not pay attention to the other people around her (her time wasn't bad, it just wasn't good for her). Needless to say, she often didn't make many friends. I'm not saying 5:21 is bad, just not where I expect to be. Does that make sense?
Thanks for all of your advise!

Just an FYI though from someone who has had 4 stress fractures...They don't show up on xray until at least 4-6 weeks after you start having pain, if ever. Bone scan and or MRI are the best way to detect it. Not trying to be negative nanny, but if you continue to have problems you will want to go have it looked at by an ortho. I went to an ER for my first stress fracture and I had the same results. Just something to keep in mind.

Ugh! Does that mean if I have a stress fracture, I'm down for the count? I'm doing IMLP in 7 weeks. If Im still in pain in 4 weeks that's trouble....

You can see if you can get a bone scan earlier -- that's how I rule them out, just to know what kind of steps I need to take to heal.
Yeah sometimes they don't , I had one that didnt. If the pain continues for another week or so I would think about a bone scan , cheaper than an mri but takes longer or a mri which is relatively quick but spendier. I have had both and they will both pick one up early on, although in MY case I always seem to think I can just "suck it up and run through it" . Part of the problem I guess. It may be nothing really. I just thought I would mention it is all since I had a similiar experience. I got my last one right after IMC while trainig for a January marathon. Was out for 5 months. It was in my tibia however, and not my foot and because of where it was I could not be booted with out restricting my knee, which would have kept me from cycling and swimming.
The time I went to the goofy er dr who dismissed it, I waited a week, then went to my regular Orthopedist. If I were you that is about all I would wait given your race situation. Stress fractures are fractures and can get worse (I know) if you do not rest it.

So yesterday I did the first Boise 70.3. It was a really tough day for me (I thought I would PR by 7 minutes (4:59) but instead did a 5:21. Really disappointing. But a good race if you're thinking about doing it next year. (The swim was really cold and thus everyone's swim was a lot slower than usual). Anyway, I had some foot problems on the run.
1) I think I have a stress fracture in my left foot. I'm going to Urgent care now to get it xrayed.
2) The thing that I was curious about getting input for was that for about 3 miles on the run, I had pins and needles in my right foot. It was really strange. Sometimes when I ride my foot will go numb but this didn't happen until I was well into the run. Does anyone have any idea what this could be from?
Thanks
