Hey all,

Had a real pretty crash in a crit on Saturday and am missing a fair bit of the flesh from my right hand side (leg, hip, arm, shoulder - the usual...). How long should I not swim with this lovely redecoration? I was thinking of hopping in the open water tonite, but hate the idea of how much it will burn and the infections it may cause...

any help welcome!

Yeah, I'm not sure about swimming in a public pool with open wounds. I'd take enough time off to at least let it scab up. I know there is chlorine in the pool and all, but open wounds are no match for even a chemically-weakend Staph infection. Get one of those and you would be out-of-commish for awhile. That's why I don't do crits.

bummer. yeah, i had that problem last year except it wasn't from a crit it was from a dumb ___ women who cut me off on the road and turned right, right in from on me and i t-boned her car, flew over the back and got road rash on several limbs. the ER doc recommend i stay out of the pool for at least a week if not more so they wouldn't get infected.

if they are small enough, you could try waterproof bandaids to help protect them from the harsh conditions.

I have seen my own death and it looks much like this. You are lucky.

If it is pool swimming, I'd wait a while. Not only because most public pools don't want any cuts or scrapes in them, but also because the chemicals in pools are very tough on new skin -- they keep killing it of, and make healing take even longer. Once it is fairly covered over, I might consider one of those big bandages that seal out all water.

Yeah, the abrasions are way too big for waterproof bandaids. I have Tegaderm on them now and will stay out of the pool til that comes off. They are basically the length of my right shin and the entire forearm (top and bottom) and a 2 inch diameter circle on my shoulder. It was worth it, I finished third in the crit crash and all...
