hot tubs!
Use it when you want to soak in e-coli Staph soup. Just kidding. I think ice baths are better at stimulating blood flow to help remove lactic acid buildup. Not sure though. At least a tub full of cold tap water and a 10lb bag of ice are better for my six pack of Tall Boys. Hot tubs in summer sound nauseating.
sounds nauseating? no way! besides, up here at 6,958 feet (according to the GPS) it gets pretty cold at night.
Use the hot tub when you're done working out for the day. The heat gets blood moving which transports the lactic acid out of the muscle. This also can lead to something similar to "water bogging" of the muscles. Ice on the other hand slows the movement of blood into the muscle. This alleviates the inflammation and leads to muscle repair.
So in essence, both are good and do different things. After a training session, I typically get into the hot tub and stretch out and relax. After a race, I'll try to go to a cold lake and wade in, followed by the hot tub later. To me the best thing to do would be hot tub first then ice bath/cold lake. I'm just backwards. :)
It's all in checking it out and seeing what you're body reacts best to.

It depends on how much damage I did (5k or sprint tri; or marathon or IM)
For the shorter distance a dip in the pool or lake afterward is fine.
For the longer distance, ice baths for a couple of days and cooler showers, to get the inflammation down
2 - 3 days later I might go with a hot tub.

No hot tub for me--only ice tubbies :)
I try to use a hot tub anytime I run into the Sweedish Bathing Suit team and happen to have a case of cold ones on hand. Any day now...
Ice bath all the way!!! :) I love them minus the shrinkage! :)

my apartment complex for the summer has an outdoor hot tub. when should I/ shouldn't I use it? I jumped in after a bike ride and my run later in the day was lethargic at best, so I'm guessing that was a bad idea. thanks
