Biking without a shirt

I was a runner before i started doing tri's, and with running, if it gets warm, shirts come off. it seems like no one bikes without a jersey. i rarely ever group ride, so if i can fit a spare tube, pump, levers and nutrition all on my bike should i feel compelled to wear a jersey? or is it a taboo?

thanks

The jersey really helps keep you cool when it's hot. Remember you create your own wind chill when you ride. I rarely get cooked even on the hottest days if I keep drinking. You'll have to keep up the sun screen thing if it's a long ride. Jerseys also help with visibility. That's why they tend to be bright and obnoxious. You could try sleeveless, but really you don't want to miss out on that great bikie tan!
Besides showing up for a local group ride shirtless just screams "NEWBIE!"

Believe it or not the only time I ride without a shirt/jersey is when I am doing my local sprint tri. You need make sure its legal in the race you are doing, but In the Charleston Sprint series, most men just wear tri shorts for the duration of the event.

During training though its shirt/jersey on!

I never run with a shirt, but almost always bike with a jersey. Jersey does keep you cooler with all the air movement to cool off the sweat. I dont say wick because here in FL, your jersey gets soaked with sweat. You just cool off that sweat. If I am doing a quick interval ride/ brick in the evening, I will go shirtless.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Pssst. Here's a secret: Most cyclists carry a spare tire made not made from rubber. Hence the shirt is always on. If you've got the body fat % to pull off that look, rock out.

+1 I, being a clydesdale, wear a shirt on bike or run (unless I'm on the trainer in my home) for the sake of the general public

Plus, when you're all hunched over on a bike, it makes you look fatter than you really are. Even TdF pros look fat when they ride because they're bent over.

I think another reason might be because a lot of people wear bibs, and wearing bibs with no shirt basically makes you look like a total tool.

As true as that comment is...I still see plenty of tools in my area doing just that

I have yet to see someone wear the bibs w/ no shirt.

That would be classic for sure!

I can't resist. At least this guy has a jersey on (and what appears to be a white undershirt/belly button cover).

He may be the strongest climber, but he is unstoppable on the down hills.

Haha, oh man, that's bad. But that does make me feel a little better about myself.
As someone who juuuust made the tri jump from running I can say that I've been wearing tri tops if only to get used to my race day clothing. I can also second the idea that while being all bent over no one really looks their best. Personally, I feel self conscious often enough due to my top creeping up, let alone going topless. But, in the end, all that matters is that you make it out the door onto the bike and whatever motivates you to do that, top or no, then go for it.

I have heard they do like an event where it is a naked ride of some sort or something?
Not in Ohio...not that I'm aware and or want to be around.

If you ride in a group often, you'll probably end up on the ground at some point. (Even if just trying to do a bike stand at a light) When you do, you'll be glad you had a shirt on. I have never tipped over when running - at least not yet.

I was gonna make this point too. I went down at about 20mph last year in some gravel, and was real glad i happened to be wearing a pretty thick polo at the time cause my back got pretty messed up even with it on, but the shirt was DESTROYED, so im glad that wasnt my skin.
