Pain above left knee while cycling
Could be the fit is off, could also be your biomechanics, weak muscles or excessive side-to-side swinging of the knee during downstroke. Could be the increased mileage, too much to soon. Could be alot of different things. The problem is, it's not going to go away without some rest and TLC. I'd think twice about a 75 mile ride this weekend. If you do ride cut down on the duration and the intensity, spin in lower gears and avoid hills. If it's still painful, see a doc.
Also, why so many running miles?
thanks for the advice cayman. i have been chilling out on the riding (15 minutes very easy pace on the lifecycle each morning just to test the waters) and focusing on running and a little swimming. my running mileage is still rather high from all my spring marathon training. i cant seem to to shake the habit of compulsive running. i swam today and felt no pain above my knee. so its clearly bike-related. i forgot to mention that the pain is only on the downstroke. i think i jumped into too much cycling too fast after not being on the bike for a while. the 75 is on sunday morning, i dont want to do anything dumb and jeopardize my season, so i will be smart about it. thanks again.
I get pain in my knees whenever my seat is too low. It's worth checking. An easy way to check is to get on your bike barefoot. Your legs should be fully extended with your bare feet on the pedals. Anyways, it's something easy to check.

whatever the cause jbird, underlying muscle weakness could be an issue. might not be a bad idea to incorporate some strength training as the knee allows, you know the drill: leg presses, squats, knee extensions, hammie curls, etc. because it is the knee build weight and reps slowly.
have a great ride sunday and be safe.
Another potential: How old are your peddles/cleats? I was having a lot of pain in my knee anytime I went over 3 hours. I understand that peddles only last 2-3 thousand miles-I had at least 5-6 thousand. I got new peddles and the pain went away. I can't imagine that your bike fit would change too much from the last time you had it done.....
Set goals...... but be here now. Enjoy the ride to the finish line.
I had that problem years ago and my PT, who was also a freind with whom I rode, noticed that my knees went outward during my pedal stroke. Taught myself to bring my knees straight up-and-down close to the bike frame. Problem went away.

I just began to log some longer miles on my bike within the last 2 weeks. It started out great. I had my first ride of 50 miles on Sunday and toward the end of the ride, I got a shooting pain just above my left knee that came and went for about the last 10 minutes of my ride. Since then I have rode lightly, but the pain shows up about 15 minutes into every ride and I am forced to cut my ride way short.
I am still running about 70 miles a week and have absolutely no pain whatsoever when I do that.
Could it be an improper bike fit? I had my my fitted last season but have since adjusted my seat and dropped my aerobars a tad lower. I think I need to schedule another fit, but do you think that this could be the cause to the pain just above my knee? I have a 75 miler planned for this Sunday so any input would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.
