What to wear for 1/2 IM??

I'm doing my first 1/2 IM next Saturday in Burley, ID (yeah!) Okay, I know alot of you will say "why haven't you already figured this out in your training!" I know I know... I thought I had, but I am second guessing myself now. My original plan was to wear my tri shorts and tri top under my wetsuit and just race in that (minus the wetsuit) for the bike and run. But now (after doing a practice one of almost the entire distance this past Sunday) I am thinking that my butt will get too sore only wearing tri shorts on the bike. What do you guys think? So then I thought I would wear my bathing suit (a two piece speedo womens) under my wet suit and then put on bike shorts for the bike and running shorts for the run. But the problem with this is that now I have on my bathing suit bottom under my shorts (which I think is so annoying and uncomfortable as someone who doesn't wear anything under her shorts when she bikes/ runs, sorry if this is TMI!) So do you think I should just suck it up and wear my tri shorts and deal with a little bit of a sore butt, or should I go with the other plan of wearing the bathing suit and then changing shorts but having the bathing suit under? This is so complicated. Who talked me into doing a 1/2 IM in the first place! J/K.... thanks for your help in advance!!

I've just worn my trishorts for both 1/2 Iron and Iron distance and have found them to be really comfortable. I actually prefer them over more padded shorts for longer distance rides. But some of that may depend on your saddle, too. Personally, I wouldn't wear a bathing suit underneath unless you've done that in long rides and know it won't chafe you for sure. Otherwise you could be asking for some really painful spots that may last onto the run.

Going with a bit of known butt soreness would probably be better than a possible load of unknown from the chaffing, etc of changing at this point. If changing completely is an option (there is a place to strip down) then you might want to think of that. If not, I'd say at this point it is safest to just be a bit sore in the rump.

+1 on what Kylie and Ironmom said. As I have said before though, less is more for me. I train and race in tri shorts , so even a full IM is comfortable (as much as possible eheheh) with them.
Stick with your original plan for now.

I did my first 70.3 this month and picked up an Orca Trisuit and it worked out wonderfully for me. Since there was no need for a wetsuit on the swim I wore just that for the entire event and not a single bit of chafing ever occured for me. I prepped before hand with some chamois cream but after the rain on the bike I think everything was gone. Still nothing.

Simplify! The fewer steps and combinations the better. But if your tri shorts are too thin, you will be miserable and you will lose time constanstly by not holding a cadence while you adjust your position to alleviate hot spots.

  1. Swim: full cycle shorts, jog bra, wetsuit
  2. T1: Take off wetsuit, put on cycle jersey
  3. Bike/Run in full cycle shorts and bike jersey
  4. T2: Change shoes, that's all.

One pair of shorts - full cycle shorts - and one jersey, that's it.

Thanks for everyones comments. I will stick with my original plan and wear my tri shorts, no bathing suit. That way no chafing which hurts more than a sore butt! I will post my race report (as long I finish and am still alive!)

Doing my first HIM in July and I am just wearing a pair of Tri-Shorts. I may have a sore butt but I know I won't want to run a half marathon in bike shorts.

Good luck on the race.

For my 1st 2 HIMs I had trained mostly in bike shorts...my tri-shorts had very thin almost non-existent padding, so I swam in them...slipped bike shorts over top of them for the ride (could do that without stripping down) and slipped them off for the run. In HIMs and IMs, especially if it's your first...don't worry about rushing through transition...if you want to change more clothing do it. T1 and T2 times have much less of an effect % wise on long-distance events and going slower from discomfort has a much larger effect.

Apply vaseline to the areas that chafe under your bike shorts prior to the race. Just don't get it all over your wetsuit because it will ruin or so they say.

I agree with the simplify idea but I would not wear regular full cycle shorts for the swim. Most are not made to absorb that mush moisture from being immmersed in water. If it is salt water you are in for a much worse time. Imagine getting one of those huge yellow sponges for washing your car, soaking and then then wearing it in your bike shorts for several hours.

It will tear you a new one in a very short time.

I have done what jsk85 did and it worked out pretty well.

Also Lather up your butt with a chammois butter before you get on the bike and that will help alot with chafing.
You want to be able to sit down at the post race party after all!! ;-)
