everyone's help needed.......
No offense intended but,
I am skeptical about anyone being a member for two weeks then hitting up everybody for donations to help their friend with some horrible disease or other.
I think there is a credibility issue here.

Good luck with everything!
I'm in TNT too, didn't make the amount for Wildflower this year but you learn for the next one!
Best of luck to you on the run and to your freind on the bigger battle. I'll go hit your link now.

PoC's starting to sound like Chunky and me.... On the other hand, he has a point.
Personally, since it a well-known fundraiser in the sport, I'd be inclined to trust the original poster. And I believe the way their site works is that the donation goes directly to TnT. Also, it is a group that many newbies to the sport participate with -- so it being a newer poster and in that group also makes sense.
Personally, I don't donate when it is posted to a board like this: we all have friends and family raising for causes, or we are raising ourselves. I instead pick the causes near and dear for me personally and keep my donations to that.
Donate or not as your conscinence guides you.
I don't know all the legalities of such things, even though I am engaged in a Ride2Survive fundraiser next month for Cancer Research myself.
When I read the following (emphasis mine) my spidey-sense tingled.
Below is a personal website that the LLS has set-up for me so that anyone can donate via credit or debit card. If you want to take 5 minutes to donate an amount that you are comfortable with, I would greatly appreciate it.
I get e-mails that sound so similar to this, almost every week.
At one per member, there is the potential for a thousand or more appeals like this
I've been a member for over three years and I would be reluctant to ask for donations.
It's tribro's call whether he wants to allow the forum to become an appeal board for fundraisers.
I don't want to make a big deal out of it but I think a little skepticism is healthy.

I didn't think this would be an ordeal/issue. All thesonicson did was ask, doesn't mean you have to respond or anything.
I've done it too on here and didn't get nothing but I wanted to try ( no pun intended ) so good for you on trying to see what you could get.

It's good to have another bouncer in the fold. Luckily I don't have to worry about if it's legit or not since I barely have enough money to take care of myself.

Best of luck Tim to you and especially your friend. For folks who aren't familiar with TNT, the links are totally legit and TNT itself handles all the fundraising $$$, it's not a "personal website" in that sense, but it's personal in that the money you donate goes to that athlete's goal, not to a general fund. It's the largest sports-oriented fundraising foundation in the world and is hoping to break the One Billion Dollar (!!) mark raised this year over their 20 years.
Good luck in your race Tim. I'm a TNT triathlon coach in my city, but we don't go to the Nation's triathlon, we're going to Pacific Crest this year. We'll be rooting for all of you purple jerseys though. GO TEAM!

I kinda feel like a couple the others do... I'm with a fundraising team too, but I won't be hitting the boards up for it. I just don't feel comfortable with that. I have to say for myself, I won't donate to TNT or the like just because so much of the raised money goes to admin fees. The group I'm with is 100% supported by the members so any money raised goes to the society.
I just feel if you just try, what will it hurt you. Nothing wrong with that I don't think.
First and foremost, I'd like thank the one's that donated and you know who you are. That meant the world to me to see people like that be generous enough to put a few dollars towards a worthy cause. Yes, I am new to this site, but all I did was ask. It's a damn shame that this crazy world has created so many cynics now, that even the noblest of causes get questioned. But that's the type of society we live in now.
I also want to thank all of you for the support and encouragement on here, it truly means alot and brought a smile to my face when I read it and I wish the best to all of you in your endeavors.
Peace.
Tim

Dwayne Howell, the CEO of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (aka TNT) makes an annual salary of $435,825. This is not out of pace with other well known non-profit CEO salaries, but who cares? It just shows most of the "non-profit" CEO's are far overpaid.
It makes it really hard for me to part with a C-note knowing that Mr. Howell is getting weathy because on my donations.
My 2 cents.
First, I'm not exactly guilt free. My signature at the bottom is the link to my fundraiser page.
Anyhow...
When I decided I raise money for Leukemia. TNT was the obvious first place to look.
I didn't sign up with them because I wasn't going to be able to take advantage of their help with training. I do think there are many people that are able to take advantage of this help and without that help might not make it to the starting line.
So the fact that some money is taken from the donations for administration fees isn't really so wrong. Think about the fact they've raised 800 million in 20 years. Without these participants, I'm guessing the people who donated to these athletes wouldn't have donated anything at all.
That being said, I did a bit of homework trying to find a way to make every dollar raised count. When I contacted Dana-Farber I asked how I could fund one specific Doctor's research and how I could do it with no overhead being taken out. They told me I had to raise $10,000 to be given the option to direct funds to a specific doctor's fund. Then there were just a couple forms I'd need to sign to have the "zero overhead" status.
$10,000 sounded like a bunch but it was the closest thing to perfect I could find.
I'm pleased to say that it's all worked out. I surpassed the goals about a week ago and it's still climbing. The Race is the Mooseman on June 7th.
I definitely encourage people to do a bit of homework when you decide to do a fundraiser. They do make it a bit difficult to get exactly what you want but you will never know until you ask.

Tim ~ I'd encourage you not to be turned off to Trifuel by some of the responses here. Many of us here have been Trifuelers for literally years, and many have become friends in the "real world". As a result, it's generally a friendly and open community. Personally, Trifuel is a huge reason that I stuck with triathlon as I began training for my first one a few years ago. But, that does lead us to be wary when someone joins Trifuel and immediately appears to be self promoting -- whether that's fundraising or promoting their own business/product. It strikes many as a way of free advertising to their own benefit, as opposed to being a real, contributing member of the Trifuel community. Think of it as that door-to-door salesman..you might be for real, or you might be "out for a quick buck", and this community works hard to keep it real.
Best of luck as you train for The Nation's. I live in DC and it's a great race. You can learn a lot by engaging on Trifuel...stick around.
"It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit." ~George Sheehan
Yes, please don't take any of the cynicism personally. And best of luck with your fundraising efforts, and wishes of health to Mark.
...and this community works hard to keep it real.
Let's make that Trifuel's motto. "We work hard to keep it real."
Ok, but what happens when "keeping it real goes wrong?" LOL (Dave Chappell comedy sketch, for those that know it are probably laughing their but off right now). Anyways, I take things with a grain of salt. So far, I have really enjoyed the opinions of everyone's post and answers to my own posts. I guess that's why I felt comfortable with what I did. And am glad I did. I believe in using ALL methods of fund-raising I can. I'm even planning on going to an exit off the interstate here and holding a sign with my tri suit & helmet on, with my bike to collect funds as well. I here the bums do pretty well there, so why the hell not. If I'm going to do this, might as well have fun doing it! :)

That's a great attitude to have about it. And if I saw that on a highway here I'd prob through a couple bucks out the window at the guy ;)

Be prepared to fight for the corner :) Here the homeless (ok, bums ...was trying to be politically correct) will fight for "their" space. They get dropped off at the corner by someone in a nice car in the morning and "fundraise" all day. I can tell you they are not from the neighborhood. In any case, a few years ago there was a study done the AVERAGE panhandler took home 35k a year tax free. GO FOR IT I say!
Good luck with your fundraising and the race!

It doesn't hurt to try.
I raised money a few years ago for the Janus Charity Challenge and I dropped my info on one of the forums here as well.
I got a few PM's in favor of what I was doing and a few more that weren't so supportive.
It doesn't hurt to ask.
Good luck!!
Nothing to it, but to do it

Hi Everyone!
I am sending out this post because a good friend of mine, Mark, just recently had a relapse of leukemia and is currently undergoing his second chemo treatment in as many months. In his honor, I am racing in his name at the Nation's Triathlon in Washington D.C. on September 14. As I'm sure you have seen, I doing this through the Team in Training campaign. I am currently looking for sponsorships so that I may achieve my goal of raising $4000. All monies go directly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Below is a personal website that the LLS has set-up for me so that anyone can donate via credit or debit card. If you want to take 5 minutes to donate an amount that you are comfortable with, I would greatly appreciate it. It can be as little as a few dollars. EVERY BIT HELPS!
I want to let you know what the LLS does. The LLS raises money to pay for research in which they are finding new ways to treat blood cancers. They also provide many support services for patients, families, & friends of those who are diagnosed with a blood cancer. The also give financial help for those who have problem covering expenses that insurance does not cover. Many of us don't understand all of the surrounding circumstances that comes with being diagnosed with these cancers, such as loss of work & being hospitalized for months at a time. Again, all you have to do is take 5 minutes to go to the website and donate a little something for a good cause. I guarantee that when you're done you'll be glad you did it.
If anyone has questions about what I am doing or if you're interested in doing the Team in Training program, please send me a message and I can give you my perspective on this program.
I will be making posts on the website with updates on Mark along with my physical and fund-raising progress. I see him a few hours a week and would want nothing more but to tell him what a difference all of you make in helping us find a cure.
I want to thank all of you for reading this and encourage you to take the next step and donate. For those of you donating, please accept my gratitude in advance for making a difference!
