strange foot problem advice needed
It could be a hammer toe or ill fitting shoes. When I've run in shoes that were too long or too short for me, my second toe would jam into the top of the toe box during the run and then bruise. However, my second toe is longer than my big toe unlike yours so that may not be the issue.
Why no foot doctor? If you're planning on dedicating your time to train for longer distances and future years of tri, why risk your toe or even your foot? Speaking from personal experience, if I hadn't finally broken down and seen a podiatrist I would still be dealing with a whole lot of foot pain now. The other reason it might be good to see a podiatrist is because it may not be your toe that is the problem, but rather your metatarsal or arch. Running is really hard on the body as I'm sure you know. And again from personal experience, it sucks to be stuck on the couch nursing a sore/bruised/broken toe or foot.
If you really are that adamant about not seeing a podiatrist, check out a specialized running store that fits your shoe to your running form/stature and tell them about your toe. They might have a good suggestion for a shoe, a size, or even something you can just add to your shoe to protect your toe.
Good luck.

You didn't metion anything about pain. What type of pain do you have? Is it painful all the time or only when you run? Running is a high impact activity and sometimes a bruise is just a bruise.
pain isn't bad, just like a bruise however, on long runs it gets steadily worse, not intolerable just increases.
my kids have both had some issues which is why i dont want/ need any more doctors, i'm not against going, just trying to save the bucks.
i suppose i was hoping that someone shared this issue and had a tape type remedy!
I was bruising the toe/losing the nail on my second smallest toe on my left foot. Would get pretty beat up by anything over a half marathon and end up losing it soon after long runs. Went up to the local running shop (lucky me, i live 2 blocks from Hanson's) and got fitted properly for some shoes.
Ends up my right foot was a 10.5D and perfectly straight, and my left foot was a 10.5EEE and slightly toe out. So i got some 10.5EE (went for the middle road, cant afford two pair of shoes) shoes that correct for the bad posture, and i havent had the problem since. So, width could be your problem.

This might be a poor suggestion... but what about attempting a half shoe size larger, and wearing an extra layer of socks? Maybe that would provide a little extra cushioning to help soften the hardness of the shoe against the toe. Sorry I'm not much help... hope it turns out alright, though!
thanks for all the advice. i went with tape. i think the dern thing is just a lazy hanger or something. the tape was all i needed, tended to pull and irritate at first but it did the trick.

BUT no foot doctors...
i have been upping my run and i have been getting a bruised toe nail. i noticed this hiking long ago but thought it was ill fitting boots, it's not.
my second toe, which is slightly smaller/shorter than the big toe(in case that matters to anyone) tends to curl under. only on my left foot! i can suffer thru it, but with my aspiration to include a marathon this year, it may need attention.
i have considered taping, but haven't yet ( mostly because in a tri the tape will likely come off in the swim)
any thoughts? Oh, its not the whole toe, just the last joint( the nail part)
