I don't know if I am just using the wrong sunscreen (it says sweatproof, waterproof, spf 50), but for some reason, if I am out there sweating (training or racing) for more than 2 hours, I always manage to get a sunburn on my back/ arms - I use the spray kind, and it feels like I am getting good coverage while I am spraying. Any ideas?

Use the non-spray kind?

But trying to reach those tough spots on your back will increase flexibility and, over time, make you able to be more aero on the bike...

Find a helper :)

Another approach Mike has been trying is actually applying a first layer before bed, letting it actually really soak into our skin. He loves it and says it really helps him not burn. I haven't done any really long races or need it since he started it.

I'll have to try that, thanks- and I'll keep the flexibility in mind when I twist into a (hopefully uncooked pretzel :)

I use Coppertone Sport for everything, and have been pretty happy with it. Make sure that you do get your sunscreen on at least 30 minutes before you plan to be in the sun, or rather, start sweating. If you start sweating before you've had it on a while, you're just going to sweat it off.

Also, remember that your clothes or hands could be rubbing it off as well, so that's something to consider... Perhaps you could consider some kind of white clothing with a UV guard to stop you burning?

As Kylie has stated, try putting on some sunscreen the night before.

I also have done it first thing race morning, and the reapplied after the swim, and then again during the bike when i got my special needs bag.

Nothing to it, but to do it

I am probably not putting it on long enough before I sweat- I am in Houston, and as soon as I walk out the door I start sweating (It's a steambath here)

I've never heard of applying sunscreen that far in advance, but the way I have always been told for best results is to apply a coat about an hour before exposer and then again right before - however, I don't see why the night before wouldn't work?

And while I like the spray on kind myself when I'm out just goofing off, its the lotion kind when I work out.

I apply it early in the morning (on race day that might be very early a.m. hours before I get dressed (kind of like an all-over lotion). Then an hour before my workout or race start, I cover all the exposed areas again. I really like Alba Botanica sports sunscreen. It seems to do the job.

I solve this problem by working out in the morning before the sun comes out. I get out by 5:30, and based on how long my usual workouts are, I'm usually back in by around 6:00.

Well, I don't know if fast is the right word for it.

I'd never heard of it either... it was just something Mike wanted to try once and so we did, and neither of us really burned. I thought it would be useless and mostly gone, rubbed into the sheets, but it seems to help. We apply again in the morning of course, and lavishly each time.

If you back is getting burned, why not wear a shirt or jersey with at least short sleeves? Then you just have to reach your arms and neck/face

that's brilliant- the thought occurred to me when I was trying to rub the darned aloe vera soothing gel on and realized I had better let it dry before I put my shirt on it...hindsight ;)

Sunscreen? Only at IM's where I can get some rubber gloved hottie to slap it on for me.
