yesterday was my first tri, it was in shawnigan lake BC put on by the westcoast tri series and subaru.
a littl backgound for ya, i just started running in jan, and started swiming some laps in april. i have been a mtb guy off and on for years but bought my first road bike a couple months ago. i'mm 33 years old and weigh in at 185lbs.LOL
i was feeling alright going into it except for the swim witch was an open water lake swim and the water i believe was around the 60 degree mark. the swim was 500m. i was in the water waiting for the gun to go off and was having second thoughts, thought to myself that there was no way that i could do the swim, i was having trouble breathing and feeling restricted from the wetsuit. after the first 150m i was 3rd last and ready to quit. the guy that was swimming with me told me that i could do it and we would swim in together. just after that i dug deap and pulled away from him. i finished out of the water 3rd last. had soem trouble in T1 gettingt he suit off and was off on the bike wich was a really hilly 22K. i passed a few people on the uphills and was trying to come from behind. my T2 was a bit better as i was riding with my running shoes and flat pedals, so i just had to drop my bike and go. passed a few more on the run and ended in 86th out of 96. with a time of 1:44.
i guess it is a good time for my first one but feel that if i had of started the bike mid pack instead of the back i would have done much better racing my own race instead of trying to play catch up. i felt good at the end and feel greta today.
thge winners of the day are fighting for a olympic spots on the cdn team in two weeks. so it was a pretty searious field in the race. overall i am having mixed emotions of the day. glad i finished, wich i would have done better. i am very excited to get to my next one. was at the pool this morning working on that.
was pretty cool to see the 1/2 iron guys doing there thing at the same time. pretty inspiring.my distances were 500m swim, 22K bike and 5K run.
i'm hooked.

Thanks for the report!! After the doubt at the beginning and finishing despite the rocky swim you have nothing to be bummed about. Keep working hard at all '4' disciplines and youll be just fine. Good luck, happy training....

Good job staying focused and not giving in to the negative thoughts. You will find (if you haven't already) that being successful in triathlons is as much of a mental battle as it is a physical one. Keep up the good work!

thanks everybody, i will try and work on my swim as my #1. i feel that i am pretty strong on the bike and the run if my mind is in the right place. i felt that in both of those yesterday that i was racing the person in fron of me's race. if i was mid pack i would have been racing MY race. just need to get out fo the water quicker.

Congrats on your first race! As to having trouble racing your race instead of chasing others down... I find it is something you need to accept. Accept where you are now racing, and stay inside your plan. Honestly, if you were mid-pack, you probably would have found yourself still chasing those in front of you :) You will get there... but have fun on the journey!

Great 1st tri jay, the swim can be a big hurdle sometimes--glad to hear you hear you stuck with it. Each one gets a little easier. Congrats on the day.

Congrats! Dude, I seriously can't believe that 1:44 was 86th out of 96! That really was a competative field. My first sprint was like 2:10 and I certainly wasn't coming in last. Have fun getting ready for the next one.

here's the link to the times, looks like they added a person, so my place is now 87 out of 97
