Ok, this one was really fun, and I still found a way to be 'that guy'. One of these days...I'll fly under the radar.

Got all the gear loaded in the pig for a 6.15 departure, and returned to put the dog in when Mr. DM was standing on the porch, almost ready to go, although still under the influence. Celebrated Diva's birthday the night before, with a pre-race meal of lobster pizza, and calamari. Don't recommend this.

Got to the venue (Union Res), and it was a perfect morning, with a forecast of sunny and 80. Mr. DM dropped me at the entrance to T1 and left to find food. Calm, relaxed, ready to go after a warm up swim in the 65-ish water. THEN About 100 yds into the swim, I had the panic thing again. ARRRRGGGGGHHHH. Quickly figured out that I can backstroke as fast as a lot of people can freestyle/crawl, so I did. For a half mile, I rocked the backstroke :-)

I've never been happier to get out of the water, and this time, I'm not last (not that it really matters). Hit the bike, and started cranking, excited to do a loop course, where even if I'm last, there will still be others to chase and be chased by. On the bike, I got passed by the pros and playfully taunted by others, and I thank them for that.

Run was equally uneventful, on a dirt road, out and back with a hill. The view of the rockies on the way home was incredible. Mr. DM returned from breakfast when I was about 150 yds from the finish line. Perfect timing.

All told - 1:34:44

0.5 mi swim 18:00 (backstrokin')
12 mi bike 41:43
5k run 30:44

Nice venue, nice people. I'll do it again next year.

Awesome. Sounds like a good race. I would kill for a 1:34. How does that compare to what you were hoping?

Oh, and carbo loading with lobster and calamari pizza is new to me. How did that turn out for you? Did it help you on the swim (you are what you eat)?

Lobster pizza from Max's Gill and Grill in Wash Park (Denver) was excellent, some of that, Diva's mac and cheese, soup and a salad. A little over the top, but it was early in the evening, and I had some time to digest. I was planning to order grilled salmon and rice, but how can you pass that up? Oh, and the triple chocolate cake. Lobster did not help the swim, maybe bottom crawling should it have come to that.

As for race time, I'm happy. There's always something. This time, besides backstrokin', I took 2 weeks completely off (making excuses for my slightly sore elbow-which turned out to be a fracture). A long taper of sorts, maybe burned out. Maybe subconsciously I knew something was wrong. Either way.

I'd like to crack 1:30. I'm getting closer every time out.

Another great race, keep rackin' em up. Nice work on the open water swim, a little different, but still good work.

Congrats on the day!

Sounds awesome. I hope I can always count on rockin' the back stroke when the freestyle lets me down.

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
