Hello All! I joined trifuel a while ago and enjoy reading the posts but have never posted myself.. this is my first one.
Anyways, I am doing my first 1/2 IM in Burley, Idaho June 7th (don't ask why I am doing it there-complicated story when I live in Colorado, tri mecca) I've done many sprints and oly races before and consider myself around top 40% or so. I really just want to finish this race without getting hyponatremia.
I talked to the race directors and they told me that the only things they are providing at aid stations are water, Hammer Gels, the electrolyte tabs, and the drink that Hammer makes (don't know the name, but the equivalent for Gatorade). I was shocked! They are not going to have any food/ bars/ coke/ fruit on the course?? Since this is my first 1/2 IM, I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. I know that I will mostly be using Gatorade and gel, but I thought I at least needed a bar or 2 to get through a race that will likely take me ~6 hours. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
1. How do I carry all my food with me wearing a tri top?
2. Do you mostly drink Gatorade or do you do 1/2 Gatorade and 1/2 water?
3. Does anyone have any suggestions for bars that are very easy to digest as I am very prone to getting stomach problems during races.

Thanks so much for your help in advance!

That isn't necessarily atypical for the nutrition/hydration offered. Good thing is that you checked it out prior to the race and can make whatever accommodations that you need for a successful day.

The overall answer is use the nutrition/hydration plan that you worked out in training.

If you need to carry more than what fits in your pockets on the bike - a bento box could be your answer for carrying bars etc.

Again, you have to find what works for you on some long training rides - as far as what your stomach will tolerate.

Of course remember the race will take you 6 hrs, but no single leg will...You don't need to carry everything with you at once. And for your first, feel free to hang out in transition and fuel a little before the run. I did at my first. I think my T2 time was like 5 minutes.

I fuelled with only sports drinks on the bike (don't remember what I used then) along with 1 gel early in the ride. I used 1/2 a bar in T2 and carried the other half along with gel in my tri-shorts pocket. Otherwise I only used what was supplied on the course for the run...maybe not the best decision, but it got me thru the day

LIAR! IT IS YOUR SECOND! j/k

Bento box on the bike with a Gu or two, and some solid food like a Clif. Start with full bottles you don't mind throwing away because they will hand you new full bottles. For the run, eat something from your T2 bag and carry it with you. Take a Gu or two on a fuel belt. And while it has been said before, it is worth repeating: eat/drink during the race only what you've tried during training.
