My Valve Doesn't Fit in That HOLE!

Ladies and Gents,

So I have a pair of Easton Vistas. I recently experienced a flat on the road. So after extensive research and the help of this forum, I bought Michelin Pro Race 3s w/ Michelin Aircomp Ultra Lights 700c <18--23> 36mm valve length.

My problem is, after mounting my tire, I CAN'T PUMP my tire! The valve is only exposed a tiny bit. I tried to wiggle it out (which worked), and inflated it part way w/ my portable pump but when I try to attach the big pump (with the psi gauge) i push the valve back in.

What can I do? Do i need to buy a valve extender?

I could be wrong but I think they sell a valve extender that you can screw on.

I usually have problems getting my pump on my tubes with anything less than 48 mm valve stems. That length usually works a lot better, especially with any of the medium profile aluminum rims. I wouldn't bother with valve extenders unless you were working with 50+ mm profile aero wheels.

They make upto an 80mm valve on a tube, I wouldn't go to extensions until you need them. Just find whatever length works best for you.

I've done the same thing: Picked up tubes in a hurry, had a flat, and the valve doesn't protrude far enough from the rim for the CO2 chuck or pump head to 'bite' on. Obviously, the valve is too short for your rim depth. You need a valve in the 50mm range. Don't get with a valve extender. Valve extender $ = Correct tube $. Valve extenders are for rims (ie, disc wheels, super deep rims) that are deeper than ANY valve.

And what are you going to keep doing? Still buy the wrong valve length just so you can use your valve extender? No, next time you'll buy the correct valve length, so buying the valve extender is just an unecessary step. You are introducing another variable and possibility for malfunction when the most obvious and simplest remedy is to buy new tubes today with 50mm valves.

Like others are saying, even the best valve extenders should only be used when absolutely nothing else works. Then they are a necessary evil, with an emphasis on the "evil."

Am I the only one who thinks this entire thread sounds really, really, wrong?

8 weeks ago was a very different time in TF. You could talk about certain things then. These days, if anyone so much as mentions a "hole" or "wax", it's free game ;)
