Bike Shifting Problem

I am not the best bike mechanic but have built up both of my bikes myself so I have an ok amount of bike skills, but am having an issue that I need a little bit of help on. I went out for my long ride this weekend and hit some hills that required me to shift off the big chain ring. The problem was the chain kept jumping between two gears when I was in the smaller chain ring. However, when I am in the larger chain ring, the shifting is perfect. I am using a 54-39 chain ring combination up front with bar end shifters and an 11-23 cassette in the back. I want to get this issue resolved because I have my A race for the season coming up in under two weeks. The automatic shifting also seems to get worse when I put a lot more force into my pedal stroke. Does any one know what could be causing this? Is the rear derailleur need some adjusting (if so then why does it shift well in the large chain ring), do I need a new chain (I have about 1500 mile or so on this one), should I just take the bike in to my shop and swallow my bike so I know it gets fixed right and have them tune it up within the next few days so I can at least get a ride in with it before my race. Any advice would be appreciated.

i had a chaing that was WAAAY too loose and it did something similar to what you're experiencing

i'd just get it to the lbs you trust and let them make it right for the sake of your confidence going into your A race

I've had that caused by a bad link in the chain before, and by needing a dérailleur adjustment (although I can't remember by how much or exactly what adjustment). Might be a good idea to take it to your shop and have them show you exactly what they do so you get it done right and get to learn the fix at the same time.

I would agree to take it to your shop. I want my bike to be a 100% for race day. That way you have complete focus on you race and not by thoughts of your bike malfunctioning.

I had a similar issue and my LBS told me I needed a new chain. I replaced it and haven't had a problem since.

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

The two gears jumping in the middle of the cassette?

First, try checking your shifting indexing (cable tension.) If your shifts are perfect (fast and exact, both up and down) on all gears but those two, I'd cough up for a new cassette AND chain. Buy em off the net if you are having a heart attack at the shop prices.

I just replaced my chain and cassetee for under $70. Shop wanted $40 for the chain alone. I replaced my stuff cause my middle gears were ghost shifting. Replaced the chain first, problem wwas still there. Replaced cassette, problem gone.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
