After the long hours of training and dedication to a multisport event - slugging and grinding through long and hot workouts - the day comes. You open up that bag containing that piece of clothing that is only worn for the most special of occasions - your race suit.

Im in the market for a new tri suit (not sure whether i want a full suit or to go the tri top and bottom separate again.) What i really want to know is what you all recommend (style and brand). Looking for something that feels good, keeps me cool, and most definately will help on the saddle for 112 miles!

I'm a two-piece kind of guy. I am a little too tall for a one piece and it just ends up giving me an atomic wedgie throughout race day. I have used Orca's tri suits because I like the look of them (and this is all just a fashion show anyways) and they were comfortable to wear. I have no complaints, but there might be something better out there, but it is ugly so I won't wear it. :)

For an IM? I go start to finish with my bike shorts (not tri shorts) on. I put on a sleeveless cycling jersey for the bike and wear that too for the run, only changing shoes and putting on a hat for the run. Having full cycling shorts is best (for me) for the bike, and they are totally run-able. Tri shorts just won't cut it (too thin) for a 112 bike. Think 'two piece' also b/c or bathroom breaks.

Ive never done an IM before but long rides in my Louis Garneau equipment have always been comfortable with no complaints. As for a one or two piece, Ive heard many people say they recommend the two piece for the longer races like IM for a little more comfort and breathability.

I haven't done a full either, but I have enjoyed my DeSoto forza full-suit...I'm more of a one-piece guy myself, maybe just used to them after wearing unisuits to row in for 4 years

I wear a two piece. The IM I did had tents for changing in T1 and T2. Next time I think I will change into bike shorts in T1 and out of them in T2. 112 was tough in tri shorts, but I don't like running in bike shorts. Quick transitions in a 140.6 are not a priority for me.

Me neither. 5:00 - 10:00 T1 and T2 are not unheard of. Since you are doing a full which have gender-specific, semi-private change areas, keep in mind that you could do a complete change of attire essentially negating any need for tri-specific clothing all together. I'd rather cycle in cycling clothes and run in running clothes. One thing you could also do is look at the online photos for the event you are doing. See what people wear. You might get a better feel for appropriate attire.

Most Iroman NA event have their photos here:

Before you plan on changing, double check on how easy it is at your full. Always very easy at the Mdot races, but some of the smaller fulls (like Vineman) it is way more complicated.

I wear a 2pc Sugoi. Not by choice, but my club is outfitted by them. I like the top a lot. It has great mesh side panels and a really long chest zipper. There's nothing special about the shorts.

I've never done a full, so can't speak to how to outfit yourself for that. But I would imagine that wearing a thin, well vented standard tri-short underneath regular bike shorts on the bike leg would be great for 112mi. It would give you extra padding and all you would have to do is pull the bike shorts off in T2.

Two piece for me. Bike shorts for IM's. One broken zipper on a trisuit right before the gun went off was one broken zipper too many!

I have a one-piece, all black Spiuk no-friction suit that is simply killer. 2 reasons: there is no padding in the seat so nothing slowing or chafing you on the run (running in bike shorts is ridiculously awkward), and I've never seen anyone else with it. But I'm not much for racing beyond an Oly so there's not much need for padding on the bike and at 5:20/mi on the run I don't want anything other than muscle burn annoying my legs.

2 piece for me, pearl izumi tri shorts and the vintage 2007 trifuel red/white sleeveless top. the PI tri short pad is a little beefier than most tri shorts, but not as heavy as a bike short.

bike shorts at an IM, c'mon people, dr chopper says, harden the f-up ;)

About Sugoi, the guy at the local shop was saying that when the stuff first came out, the quality was simply not there, and they were steering people towards other stuff because they weren't confident about the products. Then the company apparently solicited feedback, which they then incorporated into the more recent stuff, and now the quality and features are much improved (this all according to the guy at the shop). I don't have personal experience with any of their stuff, but it is nice to see a company listening to the people who are buying and using it. Imagine if Profile Designs tried something like that.

I've worn both.
Hands down the most comfy shorts I've found are my LG Shark shorts. The pad in them is very, very minimal, in fact it's hardly noticeable so you can run in them no problem. Yet with a little 'taint training' I was able to get used to them to the point where a 100+ mile ride is no problem. Now if I wear a regular cycle short the bike pad seems too big for me so all my training has been done lately in tri shorts (LG, DeSoto, Peal Izumi). But of the ones I use, like I said my favorites are the LG.
The only reason I used 2 piece for IM is if I need to make an emergency #2 stop (thankfully I didn't). Other than that I've raced up to halfs in one piece no problem.

Trisport - which sugoi top do you guys wear? I was looking at some of them and found one that i really liked was this one http://sugoi.com/item/59264/SUG20650U.228 but didnt know if anyone had experience w/ it - seems like it is very well ventilated

As far as the shorts go - it seems like LG, orca, and Pearl Izumi are the top runners.

I wear 2 pieces --pearl izumi and sugoi. (various combinations)..like them both. I am probably one of the few, but in my last IM wore the same shorts for the whole race (first IM I wore tri shorts and changed to running shorts for the run). In both though, I had tri shorts for the bike. I have a comfy saddle and go with the "less is more" theory. Bike shorts with padding bugs me after 50 miles or so and the tri shorts are simply more comfortable. I train in them, and race in them :)

Harden up? ;) Oh please...Taking good care of the "boys" keeps the wife happy.
And what is all this fussing about changing and such? You want hard...wear the same outfit for the whole race...When did IM's get prissy? I'm with Brittda...Wear the same, fuss less, be happy.

I thought I was a one piece guy, until I did a pre-race training brick in one. I am a tall guy and as mentioned above it was a constant fight to keep the pressure of of the pressure sensitive areas. So before the race I went out and purchased a two peice, both zoot. I can't say if they are the best since my experience is only with these two setups. But hands down, two piece is the way for me.

Personally I like the two piece; those one piece suits look and feel kinda strange to me. Just go with comfort. I love my 2XU Tri-shorts.

I just did one in a bikini top (tight fit, black) and spandex shorts (also black) for the swim, and then added on the bike shirt for the bike and run. I know some people change, but here in honolulu, our transition area is open, so anyone and everyone can see you...
ive heard the tri suits are great, but wow, it takes some serious self confidence to pull off that look... good luck.
fyi - not sure how necessary those bike shorts actually are. the spandex ones i used were fine, wasnt at all sore after riding and going into running, and was fine after, no problems running that night.
