Back Flat Tire, Tire Recommendations?

Well, I can't tell you guys how many issues i've had so far since i bought my first tri bike..

I have a Cervelo P2-SL equipped w/ the standard Easton Vista and Vittoria Diamante Pro Lites 700cc x 23. I assumed most tires would be able to withstand the brute of glass shards on the road, boy was I wrong. I stopped at a light and when I clipped my shoes back to get pedaling i started fish tailing... I parked my bike to notice that there were small fine cuts in my rear tire. Most likely from the broken glass i ran over on the road.

Now I'm looking for some replacement tires/tubes but I'm not sure what to get.

I read that most people have 2 sets of tires: 1 for racing; 1 for training. Can anyone suggest a nice durable tire that can be used for training? And one that can be used for racing? Will any type of tube work?

I'm 153 LBS. Also, what type of profile tire can you suggest i get?

Yeah, those stock tires on cervelos are mostly good for shredding on the trainer and not much else. My wife flatted her very first time out on that same tire.

Stick with size 700x23c for training & racing. No real need to go narrower than 23 unless you have race wheels that recommend it, and even then you may want the comfort and durability of the 23.

I like Michelin Pro Race 2 for training and racing. They are comfortable to ride and reportedly about as fast as clinchers get. No tire will survive repeated trips over glass, but if your roads are generally OK (they don't have to be perfect) then the Michelins are plenty durable enough.

I'm trying the Pro race 3 for racing this season, but I haven't ridden them yet so I don't have an opinion.

probikekit.com is selling Pro Race 2s now for $29 each shipped. That's as cheap as I've ever found them.

+1 Michelin ProRace 3 for training/racing, 700X23. Ebay for < $75 pair.

This last year of training and commuting I've had michelin Krylions; they're pretty cut up now so I've ordered a pair of michelin pro2 races (coming in a week), just in time for race season

If you want tires for training and racing look for flat protection for the training tires and low rolling resistance for the racing tires. Good examples: Specialized all-condition pros (basically armadillos that don't suck as bad in corners) for training. There are lots of fast race tires like the Michelin PR2s, S-Works Mondos, etc. I wouldn't want to train on PR2s like those other guys....we have a lot of crap in the roads here and they wouldn't last. Also.....try to avoid riding through glass.

+1 Michelin Krylions for training. They've held up through lots of glass.

Thanks for the post! I have the same bike and flatted out three times last week while riding IMC course. Got me very nervous. Hopefully it was just the tires. Looking forward to the responses.

Of course - flats always come in 3's. Not sure why that is. You should be good for a while now.

I am a huge fan of the Continentals. I run the GP Attach&Force, and I'm not afraid of a little cyclecross now and then.
