bike tire/tube issue
3 or 4 years is an old tire. The bike shop is doing you a favor by telling you to get a new one. Tires can weather and crack especially after so long.
They probably should have let you know that you needed a new tire before they put a new tube in the first time. The tube they put in would have been able to create enough force to split the tire unless there was something wrong with the tire already. Also, if it is an established bike shop, they have probably switched out thousands of tubes and the chances of them screwing up are slim. Their explanation for what happened seems very reasonable and I bet that is what happened.
You might be able to talk them into paying for the tube and the tube install because they should have noticed the splits in the tire before they installed it the first time.
Yeah, tubes don't explode unless the tire gives way. Old tires can develop cracks or tears that may not be visible until they expode, or the bead can stretch over time and the tire will blow right off the rim. I think a new tube and/or free install would be a good gesture on the part of the shop, but I don't think they are to blame for this.

Thanks for the advice everyone...the shop has agreed to replace the tube and I'll end up buying the new tire. I appreciate everyone's advice.

+1 New tires (F and R) every 1,000 miles or so, carry a tube or two with pump/C02 with you, and know how to change a tire and patch it, too. (Although patches never work for me.) No goop.

So while on a ride on Monday my back tire went flat. I took it into a local repair shop to get a new tube put in, one that has the goop (or whatever the green stuff is on the inside to keep it from going flat). They did so. It then rained for a couple of days so my bike sat in the garage and wasn't used. I left town yesterday but received a call saying that my back tire was flat and that there was green goop all over the garage around my bike. I am still out of town but had someone take it into the same shop to get a new tube put in it. I received a call today from the bike shop saying that I have a couple of splits or cracks in my tire. Also, that they would put a new tube in but I would need a to purchase a new tire. The tire is about 3-4 years old but was working well and I hadn't had any problems prior to this new tube being put in this week.
My theory is that the tire wouldn't have split, but for their faulty tube which exploded. Their theory is that the cracks/splits in the tire provided the weakness that allowed the tube to bulge and eventually pop. They are holding on to it until I can come in on Monday and take a look at things.
Has anyone ever had a similar experience? Should I just give it up and pay for a new tire? Should I continue to fight this one and demand they pay for it? Advice please.
