Bike rental for race?

I've got a crazy idea. I thought I'd throw it out to the "experts" and see what you all think.

I'm travelling out to Boulder, Co in July to do the Boulder Peak Olympic tri. I'm planning on shipping my road bike but the more I look into the cost of shipping it the more I can't believe how expensive it is. $50-70 to ship each way plus a LBS building it up for $40-50. I'm looking at close to $200....ouch!

Has anyone ever rented a really nice road bike for a race and thrown on your own pedals, seat, and clip-on aerobars? I know it's not a perfect fit and all but it might be a lot cheaper.

Again what do you think? What am I not considering? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

I say, buy a new one there, and ship it back home! ;)

I would write down every measurement you can think of on your own bike. As long as you get the right frame size, you should be able to adjust about everything else to fit you (except stem length/height). It sounds like a reasonable idea to me, especially since there's a good chance that your bike could get damaged in shipping and what not.

Rent a hard-sided bike box from your LBS and ship it or take it on the plane with you. You should be able to reassemble it yourself. Building it up means installing headset, installing fork, bottom brackets and cranks, etc. You aren't breaking it down so much that you need an LBS to reassemble. Take off the wheels; take off the pedals; loosen the stem and rotate down handbars; drop the seat tube. You can do that in your hotel with an Allen wrench.
