The Park Tool Website has a pretty good bike maintenance section.

+1 on Sheldon Brown.

Unfortunately, Mr. Brown died in February.

Thankfully his website: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/ is still up and running.

I'm going to go against the grain a bit here, with a +1 for Zinn (Zinn and the Art of Triathlon Bikes, specifically). While the web is nice for quick inquiries, this book is a great reference; I find it easier to have an actual book at my fingertips that I can have open on my workbench, vs. having to mess with the internet to find information. While it was not free ($20 I think), I feel it's paid for itself in terms of convenience/my time. There's also a section on how to make emergency, McGyver-like repairs on the road, which is cool.
