Tri Bike Seats
The discomfort is typical. As far as saddles go, it's a personal preference but I think the most important thing is just getting used to the position. I like the Profile Design Tri Stryke but there are a number of others that are popular as well. Pick one and take smaller rides initially to adapt to the position change.

+1
I put a Tri Stryke on my road bike and it cut numbness and discomfort down dramatically. I wish I had done it a lot sooner. I am a pretty drastic nose-rider, and the Tri Stryke lets me hang out on the very tip of the saddle without a problem (other than my knees hitting my elbows!).
If you've been happy with your road saddle, though, it might be beneficial to try just tweaking its position to see if you really need a new one. Try sliding it forward in the rails in relatively small increments and see how it feels. Make sure it stays level or even ever-so-slightly nose up. It seems logical and tempting to tilt the nose down to accommodate aero-bars, but this is really the wrong response. It'll cause you to slide forward to the narrow, uncomfortable part of the saddle (not to mention your arms will fatigue more quickly)
I also use the tri stryke and it made a HUGE difference - numbness and "most" of the discomfort have disappeared. I stopped using bike shorts (only using tri shorts) b/c I found there was almost too much padding w/ the saddle.
Thanks for the input. I'll look into the Tri Stryke seat too.
I just bought a Profile Design Tri Stryke seat - and while I haven't taken any long rides on it, it is comfortable and better than the road racing seat I previously had. I had a hard shell with no padding and it was very narrow. The Tri Stryke has a more padded wider nose which makes riding on the front of the seat more comfortable. The nice thing about the Stryke is that it can be used to hook the bike from the front or the rear onto most transition racks. My road seat didn't allow me to do that so I used my handlebar brake levers instead.
Stay away from the Fi:zi:k or however they spell it. The most uncomfortable seat I've ever had. That thing was designed for numbness it seems.
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
I had a Fizik and was very happy with it. Same with Specialized Trivent. The only probelm I'd have with putting a tri saddle on a road bike is that I am very uncomfortable sitting back on a tri saddle (I'd also be very uncomfortable sitting on the nose of a road saddle, though). I think if you put a tri saddle on a road bike, you'll lose some of the road usefulness. If you're only doing tri-type stuff on it, that shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't like doing group rides on a tri saddle, though.

Not fast enough.
I got a Profile Design Tri Stryke with a Thompson Elite setback seatpost (reversed) to get a more forward/aggressive position on my road bike. It seems to be paying off and when I really get on the nose I can increase my speed by 1-2 MPH without any change in my RPE.

I'm thinking about getting a tri saddle for my road bike that I use for training and racing with clip on aero bars. Right now I just have a standard road bike seat, and when I am down in the aero bars I get very uncomfortable as I sit further up on the seat to get in a better position. Any advice on using a tri seat for added comfort and better positioning on a road bike? Also, would it make regular riding harder or uncomfortable? Any seat recommendations?
Thanks for any help and advice
