I am doing the 1st Triathlon of the year on Sunday any ideas on how to stay warm in 60 Degree water since I only have a sleeveless wetsuit? I figured I could put bodyglide all over me and put on two swim caps? Anything else?
Thanks

Mat

Skull cap. it's wetsuit material for you head and you wear it under your swim cap. Not much help for the arms but keeping your noggin warm seems to be important.

AKA 'squid lid', you might also find booties. But at this late date, I'd be suprised if you can track them down. You could also pee in your suit right before you get it. Put the suit on, jog in place to raise temp as much as possible. But not much else. Swim very fast.

60 is cold, but doable. Make sure you get in the water 5-10 minutes before your race so you can get acclimated as much as possible. If its a beach start and you don't get used to the water, rushing in will take your breath away and will probably shock your system fairly severely. And as others said, a neoprene swim cap will do wonders since you body loses a lot of heat through the head.

Since it is so close to the date; peeing in my suit right before makes total sense. I didn't think that peeing myself would ever make sense at my age; lol.

Hi, i remember waaaay back when I did a 5km open water swim race; general consensus amongst the swimmers was to slather oneself in vaseline to reduce the impact of cold...however I wasn't then having to get out of the water and throw clothes on; guess I'd be having to throw gloves on too in case my hands were slimy and I couldn't hold onto the bike!!...if it's any small consolation, I am racing my first tri in a long time this weekend at a lake which is 52F. However I am doing it with a full length wetsuit and am thinking I will put 2 silicone caps on plus the race cap to keep my noggin warm. have a great race, nice to know there will be others out there freezing their butts/arms off.

Let's not get out of hand here. Forget the extra cap, booties, gloves, and grease. 60+ degree water calls for a nice warm up and a intra-suit pee. You're making the cold water a bigger deal than it is, don't let it get to you. You can over come it before the race if you're smart about it. Like Scully says, make sure you're in the water for a while to warm up, I'd say at least 15min and stay in it! Get at least 300m in nice and easy, and keep moving by doing double arm back-stroke. It will keep you more loose than everyone else and won't waste energy. Don't be one of the clowns that you're going to beat and be dipping your toes and whining about the water...and keep peeing :)

There were people at a half I watched with temps at 60-62 in sleeveless who seemed to do fine. The neoprene cap can be nice because it also stops cold water from constantly washing into your ears. The best thing for not being shocked by it is to get in early and let your wetsuit get wet (so that you can warm that with your body; to pee or not to pee is up to you). While you're getting the suit wet, put your face in the water and breathe out as you do while swimming. Do this a bit, then swim a bit. The face-in/breathing thing, before the start, will keep you from being shocked by the cold and feeling like you can't breathe.

I just finished that tri; water temp at kick off a Hot 55 Degrees; don't let anyone tell you that swimming in a sleeveless wetsuit in 55 Degree water is fine. The water took my breathe away almost the whole race. I still finished the Sprint under an 1 Hour and 15 minutes but damn that water was cold. My feet were so numb that I had a hard time putting on my socks during the transition.

A good start to the season. Can't wait for the Half Marathon; Olympic then the Half Ironman.

bschiller is right
60 is not that cold. I only have a sleeveless and at about 65, i get hot in it.

cayman-

Thanks for encouraging words.

Fpugsley-
Yeah 65 degrees and 55 degrees is a bit difference; especially here in New England where the air is cold. Maybe I am just a wimp with the cold..

I ran the race this Sunday and the water temp dropped to 55 degrees. I was just saying that 55 is cold to me.

Forget the grease - you're gonna hate the mess, plus, it's going to hand on you all day and if you get some in your eyes you'll regret it.

This is way easier than you think.

Put on a cycling jersey over your sleeveless wetsuit - a long-sleeved spandex one is best. It will not only keep you warmer but it will also stop water billowing the chest of your wetsuit and increasing your drag while swimming. I did this last year at IMC.

I'd suggest you use a spare cycling jersey, not the one you plan to ride in because it would serve you better if you stitch up the rear pockets - don't want them acting as water parachutes.

The spandex won't restrict your stroke.

good luck on the race,

i also have a 60 degree swim ina week and a bit. i don't have a wet suit but am getting worried about it. best i can do here is rent a 3mm surf wetsuit, should i do that? i can also buy a shorty suit, but will that be warm enough. we are int he water at 7:40. this is my first tri and the cold water is getting to my head.

If it is a sprint event, suck it up and get a warm up before you start. Peeing in your suit is kind of a given. If it is longer you can put a light coat of vaseline on your arms. Have a few baby wipes handy in T1 to give yourself a quick wipedown after the swim.

If you're like me and nyfan, you'll be freezing. Bad enough the feet went numb even with the wetsuit, no way would I do 60* without one. If that's the best you can do, go for it; just be sure to get in some practice time with it as it will restrict your swimming stroke.

Jay-
I couldn't/wouldn't do my 1st Triathlon in 60 degree water without a wetsuit. Just rent one, a full suit. This time on the year in the Northeast when they say 60 degree water what they really mean is that at 7:45 am that water is going to be below that. So do yourself a favor and just rent a suit, being cold takes my breath away and I can't get into my normal rythm.

Socket-
I am now purchasing a full-suit, no more of those cold swims for me in a sleeveless.
