It's 5 AM, and so my first day of Masters swimming begins. I know this is a pretty common thing among triathletes, so who else out there gets up around 5 every day?

It is a beautiful time of day. It will be much easier when college is over.

Good morning. It never seems to get easier to get out of bed this early. However, this is the only time of day that I know I can get the workout done. I know I'll feel great after the workout and will be in a better mood all day having started it this way, but man it's early.

love it....love riding before the sun comes up. We also have a crowd at the local YMCA who work out at 5. You are not alone...

I too have been getting up early, but haven't worked out yet until I am in the habit of it. It hasn't gotten easier, but I read that it might be valuable to get a lighted alarm clock, that gradually brightens the room upon the time you set your alarm, tricks your body into thinking it is later in the morning...the only issue is if you have a spouse.

I have one of those alarm clocks. It helps, but honestly, you eventually know even in your sleep that it's just the alarm clock. So its benefits are fleeting!

Getting up this morning was actually pretty easy since I was somewhat excited about it and not yet dragging from lack of sleep. I'm sure that will disappear quickly though! In any case, the early morning start will definitely make my day seem more productive, and probably give me an energy boost. It's always good to know you're not alone (especially among trifuelers who wake up to workout but still check the website first...)

Morning Sunshine!
I love the 5:00 am swim. Soon our outdoor pool will be open and that is even better. I actually just started riding my bike to swim practice so I leave the house at 4:30 am. It is spooky dark at that time. You'll love being an early bird.

I have been doing it for four years now...I think getting a workout in before the real day begins just sets the tone and makes the day so much better.

I however have been slacking of late. I find it harder to get up at 5 now that I'm out of college since before I had a structured practice for rowing...now I'm only accountable to myself. I'll adjust soon enough though...just need to go to bed earlier

I thought the workout was the real day and the rest was just passing the time until the next workout?

That's how I really feel...but I try to keep that fact down since I doubt my employer would be pleased to know I spend a good portion of my day thinking about workouts, equipment, and my next race

I love 5am! Unfortunately it's to go to work. Sometimes I can squeeze in a spin on the trainer or a short run, but I hjave a commute and have to be at school early....In the summer though I'm up and doing...riding or pushing metal around.

I'll be out the door at 5am to either run or swim, or hop on the trainer a few days a week. Some days are far easier than others and I love my 6mile run that starts in the dark and finishes with daylight coming up. The only problem is I'm super hungry at work on those mornings.

I am the end of 20 week trinaing cycle and the 5:30am wake call has gotten harder as the weeks have gone by and the workouts have gotten longer, but, I wouldnt trade it for the anything. My wife thinks I am nuts too.

I seem to do well at going to the pool for a swim in the morning. I have yet to string together runs or bikes in the morning. I keep trying to bike/run in the morning but it never lasts through the week.

I'm not sure if it's the fact that there is a coach and other people at the swim. Or if it's that a swim just seems like a more enjoyable start to the morning than a run or bike.

I got in that habit for Junior High baketball practice. 20 years ago. You'll get used to it. The key is getting to bed earlier. And BTW, 5am will really put a damper on your PARTY!!! social life.

It's nice to know we aren't really nuts, even though the warm body next to you not getting up thinks you are! It's about lifestyle - when I want to turn the alarm off I ask myself what a professional would do, and my ass drags itself out of bed

I've been doing the 5:am thing for a few months, 4:45 for early swims, and now the warm body next to me is getting up with me. That makes it a lot easier to leave the bed!

Weekends, unless I have to get up for whatever reason, I'll "sleep in" till 7 or 8. I've always been a morning person, though.

Nah, the professional would just think, "hey, my job is to work out today, and since most people start work at 9, I'll stay in bed and start my day with the rest of them."

At least that's my rational. I'm no pro, though; merely unemployed.

I'm on the road ,as I mentioned earlier, by 6am...I just feel sorry for all those poor sods schleping the opposite way down 270 in the morning having left home in Southern PA or Western Maryland at 4 to get to work by 6:30...Man! THAT"S a waisted life....I don't care HOW much bread you make doing it.

i also have 2 young kids, i started my masters swimming last week. mine doesn't start untill 6:30 though. so i am not up untill around5:45. only takes me 5 min to get to the pool.
only problem i run into is i manage a pub and work nights, then stay home with my kids during the day while my wife works. so not much sleep here.
worth it though, for now anyway.

Sorry peeps, the only time up at 5 is on race days! Although with 2-a-days starting next week, I may have to consider it. :-(

430hrs here. Ride 15mi each day to work cause I don't have a car. Welcome to the early risers. I got 2 kids and a wife . Most of the time it's cool, but some days just suck. Staying in bed till 7am IS sleeping in.

One thing is for sure - having a regular habit of waking up between 4:30 and 5 makes getting up that early on race day seem like no big deal.

What I think is kind of funny are those days when I don't get to work until after 9:30 but have been up since before 5. I love that I have a flexible work schedule and a boss that understands! Otherwise this endurance thing really wouldn't work.

Bike rides before sunrise... sounds like I found a reason to buy more stuff for my bike. I have a hard enough time avoiding holes in the road during the day, so I can't imagine navigating in the dark without some lighting.
