So i've got two lady friends training for their first ever triathlon(sprint). What do women beginers without much extra money wear? I've been to focused on my own stuff at my races and forgot to look around.

Tri shorts...not bike shorts (i.e. much less padding). Top would be something with a built-in bra. Some women just wear a tri-specific sports bra. Others prefer something with more coverage (like a form fitting tri-top that comes to their waist). Don't try and put on a t-shirt after the swim...I made that mistake at my first tri, since I was apprehensive about my not-exactly-size-2 physique. Reassure them that they'll be wearing exactly what everyone else is.

Check out some of the online sites -- all3sports.com, trisports.com or others. Sometimes they still have last season's clothing at a discount.

Yeah, the crucial things are tri shorts and a decent sports bra. "Decent sports bra" depends on how busty they are -- the more bust the stronger the sports bra must be! If it is a sprint, they can wear a tri top over that (or the built in sports bra in some of them might be enough support) if it makes them more comfortable. It depends on the length of the event and their comfort level with their bodies in spandex though.

At a sprint, I actually see people in all kinds of clothes -- so they will be fine with whatever they are comfortable training in.

When I was first doing sprints I went for the simple bathing suit/run shorts combo (with an extra bathing suit top from a two piece under my one piece for extra support during the run). This worked perfectly well for me when I was just getting my mojo, and cost me nothing extra since it was gear I already had.

For my first one I just wore my bathing suit and a pair of tri shorts. I was really comfortable the entire race. I got my shorts at TYR.com.

When I did sprints I used a pair of bun huggers and a New Balance top w/ sport bra under neath. Doing more I went to the tri shorts and bathing suit.
