I'm racing my first olympic distance on Saturday (May 10). Do I need to taper this week?

I've gone into the week before my sprint distance races full throttle. Does the olympic distance necessitate a taper, or is the taper only for long course?

I believe there should be some kind of taper for any special race. I even had a taper for swimming the 100 breaststroke. It seems to be that the longer the event is, the longer the taper is. People who do IMs (not me) I've heard can taper for 3 weeks. I race Xterra and will have the last week be taper, and the week before that is lots of fast efforts with still some endurance.

I do a priority list of races, I taper for any race that is an A race no matter what the distance. Any B race I will do a much shorter taper and C races I train through.
It all depends on how important this race is for you, but a couple days of taper will not hurt you in the grand scheme of things.

+1 to kevinb. I always take at least one day off before any race. Though i have been known to ride my bike to a coffee shop or walk around a lot before shorter ones. Good luck racing!

As everyone else said, its not the length of the race that matters, but how important the race is to you. If this is your goal race of the season, and its what you've planned your training around then you should definitely peak for it. If its a race where results don't really matter and you are using it as a stepping stone for bigger and better things then you can probably train through it. More than likely you will want to have a small taper to perform well in the race, but its probably not your "A" race since you are asking us this question.

Typcially I would increase intensisty the week before the race but for shorter distances and then at least take 1-2 days off and the day before do a really light workout for warm-up purposes. Tapering is a must for any race.
