Advice: sweating while biking
I have to wear a headband and wristbands.
Not the greatest look but I had to go with functionality.
I thought about doing that, but also think I'll fill up the headband. :) I'll have to give it a go the next time and see if that works. I agree with functionality over look.
Another option for a tri would be to squirt water in your face every once in a while. Your face will be all wet, but at least your eyes won't be burning.
I tend to sweat a lot generally, so I started wearing a under armor skullcap. It helps keep my hair down too, so it fits in the helmet better, and it keeps a lot of the sweat at bay. Sunglasses can also do a little to protect your eyes
Some sunglasses with an integrated sweatband (or removable sweat blockers as they call it) could do the job if look matters to you, but it needs to be close-fitting. Some members might know about other models, since I only know about Adistar S or Adistar L by Adidas (120 $ on eBay). Good luck getting rid of your problem!

Yeah. I could use headband hand-ups during a race. :-)
I use one of these from time to time: http://www.rei.com/product/710872?vcat=REI_SSHP_CYCLING_TOC
It is a headband with a rubbery gasket that is supposed to direct sweat away from your eyes and more towards the side of your head. It works OK, though I tend to break out like a 14 year-old where the rubber touches my forehead.
wow, nice ideas! Thanks!
I'm gonna have to go to the Under Armor store to check out the skull cap thing. I love UA stuff. And, the integrated sweatband sounds interesting too. I have been thinking about that.
I have been dripping sweat into my current shades, and then I really have to stop to clean them off so I can see again. But, if a different pair will help....
Maybe I'll do all of the steps...It may require that. I tend to sweat just thinking while sitting on the couch, in the middle of winter, with the AC on. :) Ok, slight exageration, but close. :)
I use Headsweats visor for my long runs, they have the rubberish strip across the forhead, they have sweat bands I think.. I know they have skull caps ,, love them, I used to get the burning eyes from everybodies favorite mix of sweat and sunblock, mmm really miss that... NOT..,
Longer hair has worked for me. Used to have long hair, no issues. When i hacked it all off shortlike, sweat in my eyes all the damn time. Long hair again now and no issues.
Or wear a running hat under your helmet, thatll wick the sweat out to the brim and not on your face.

I live in Phoenix and I use a Headsweats Shorty which has a sweatband built in. It works very well under a helmet. I did a 35 mile ride yesterday without any problems.

Try a Sweat Gutr. They're amazing. One should last you a lifetime. I wear mine both for running and biking. Since I started using one I've been able to keep my sun glasses on for an entire ride. I wear it just below the front helmet pad and no longer have the problem you described. They're way too expensive for what you get in my opinion but I'd also have to admit that it really works. I can't remember what mine costs but shortly after I bought it on line I was at a large biking tour event where the manufacturer had a display set up. He was selling them for $10.
I too feel your pain I commute in Tucson, I have discovered that the UA skull cap works really well too. Best of luck!

Plus it keeps your head from getting sunburned, if you're "balding" like me.

So, went to UA this weekend and bought a Skull Cap. Will give it a try on Thursday's commute. :) If that doesn't work, looks like the Sweat Gutr will probably work. The skull cap is cheaper at the moment, since I didn't have to pay S&H...so, gotta try it! I'll update Thursday/Friday.
Try a Sweat Gutr. They're amazing.
I'll second this. They work wonders. I use a Halo band for my trainer work, but dont liek the way they fit under a helmet. Skull caps trap too much heat for my tastes.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Now I'm rethinking it...maybe I should have bought the Sweat Gutr first...just nip it in the butt right away. :)
I guess I'll see how the skull cap performs tomorrow. Fingers crossed, until I ride. :)
I forgot to preface my advice with...I'm not from AZ, so I don't deal with the extreme heat as often in Cincinnati...however, I still think the skullcap should help
And if not...you could always just wear it for style...I think it adds at least 4 to your intimidation factor in almost any situation...and it looks good with sunglasses (Note: black skullcaps are much more intimidating than white from personal experience...haven't tried the other colors)

Pink skullcap = not intimidating. Just trust me.

I do have a black skull cap, and I even forgot to shave today, so with the shades, the cap, and the greater than 5 o'clock shadow, pretty intimidating! :)
I almost thoroughly soaked the cap this morning (only 60-65 degrees), but no drippage into the eyes. I'm eager to see how it performs this afternoon...I'm hoping it also dries before then too! :) It'll be in the low 90's on the ride home today, so I know I'll be sweating uncontrollably! :)
fight through the pain, youre a triathlete! (i hope)
the pain of sweat is NOTHING compared to the pain you encounter on a daily basis!
plus if your sweat is realllly stinging, you might not be drinking enough water
everyone knows sweat=water+salt(s) so stay hydrated and salted! invest in a on board cow lick for those long races!
edit: hahahahah at the gutter! thats amazing,
The ride home went beautifully! It was like I wasn't even sweating at all! :) Good skull cap! :)
I have thought about an on board cow lick...actually stealing my horses' salt block may be a good idea... :)
I will probably order a sweat gutr too, just to test it out in comparison.

I can't tell if this was tongue in cheek, but that's the type of attitude that makes people get injured, and makes children hate a lot of things that their parents try to force them into. I was doing a 5K fun run, and there was some dork with an Ironman tattoo on his leg practically yelling at his 10-year-old daughter to stop walking and start running even though the first half of the race was all uphill. She was freaking crying, and this dork just kept saying stuff like "you just have to find your rhythm, and then it will stop hurting". I have never been more ashamed to be a triathlete.

that guy should make his daughter get a tatoo that says "Loser" on her leg for being such a crybaby.

Just hoping for a bit of advice on what to do with sweat on the bike. Here's my recent deal.
I have been commuting into work lately on my bike...1 way is 22+ miles. The mornings are fine, the afternoons are hot (Arizona). Last week, I just kept going and trying to wipe sweat away, but it got in my eyes, nose, mouth, etc and was just plain nasty. In addition, after getting in my eyes for a while, my right eye got swollen and really red. Not fun.
Yesterday, I made sure to stop 3 or 4 times and squeegy the sweat out of my front helmet pad. This seemed to work wonderfully, but sucked that I had to stop 3 or 4 times. I don't want to have to stop during a TRI and wipe sweat.
Any ideas?
