wow.
thats impressive for sure
When I only had one forerunner ;) I was able to get a usb battery pack -- basically 4 AA batteries in a box that had a usb port (which I duct taped to my aerobottle). Then I just plugged the charging cable in and had the forerunner powered by the batteries when on the bike. I pulled it off and ran with it after that, and so it started the run with a full charge. However, that was with a 301, and I'm not sure about the whole docking cradle charging of the 305. But you could always just get another one (says she who has 2.5 of them).

When I first started reading that link, I thought the guy was going to try and power it with a few watts that he generates from biking! haha
Heh nice hack, reminds me of when i turned a popcorn popper into a coffee roaster a couple months ago. Pretty basic stuff, but some might want to go for the charger from a store instead.

that is one insane effort to keep the garmin going. i mean wow, just wow

Wow, I think you'd have to be Macgvyer to pull that off!
This whole thing makes me wonder why Garmin doesn't just figure out how to put a couple of small solar collectors on the wrist band and call it good. Really.

Actually, have you ever seen those kinetic watches which get power just by your average daily movements? Granted they are only mechanical and dont have a lot of digital functions like the 305, but with all the arm movement that happens while running you'd think you could generate a decent amount of power by tapping into it.

I love my Garmin Forerunner 305 but I am now faced with a dilemma as I prepare for Ironman Louisville (my first IM). The battery life for the Forerunner is listed at 11 hours, however, it is going to take me more than 11 hours to finish the bike/run legs. So, I can either start injecting some "flax seed oil" and try to get faster, or figure out another option. I have thought about getting a cheap bike computer and just using the Garmin for the run, but I would really like to know my heart rate as I bike so I can keep things in check. I could always just go with the Garmin until it dies and then run the way people had been running for several million years before GPS technology, but now I am a slave to the machine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
