Are you kidding, I'm too cowardly to read this article! After the triathlete in SD, and now the surfer in Mexico...my nasty grimy local high school pool is looking pretty good. I'm fairly certain there's no Jaws-like creatures there. I might end up becoming a duathlete just because I'm too frickin scared of what's IN the open water.

You're right. But I prefer being the carnivore on the TOP of the food chain, not somewhere in the middle of it!

The way I figure it, if I stay in mid-pack, there's a good chance the shark will go for someone bigger. Heehee Plus, if there were a shark in the waters, I'm sure I'd swim faster than ever before. PR's are great!
And don't worry Tamara, when you come back down to race in the 70.3 WC, I'll protect you :)

I'm not all about swimming with the big fish. Just heard a story from my Mom on a 65 year old triathlete was I think in CA and got chomped away at a shark. Okay mind you these are flaky details but I don't think I could...def. something I'm nervous about and I'm a tough one. (lol)
Yep. A triathlete was killed off the coast of CA very recently. Briefly mentioned in the article. Not sure of details either, but I know that his buddies were out of the water, and jumped in to try and rescue him.

I heard the story on the news, they actually swam back to him and were able to get him away from the shark, take him back to shore alive, but he bled to death before they could get him medical attention.
The way I see it, I'm as likely to be struck by lightning on a run as eaten by a shark, so I just keep on tri-ing!

+1. On the news video they actually said that there was only one person in all of 2007 killed by a shark attack. I think there have already been 2 or 3 fatal attacks this year, but it's still a one-in-a-million type of thing.

Not this guy...er, mean gal. Unless I make it to Hawaii for IM, then I'll do it. Other than that...Nope.
I don't even go in the ocean all the way in, I'm up to knee sometimes thigh high. Weird how things change when you get older and think about things more.

I'm the opposite, I had more fears and "thought about things (like that) more" when I was young, now I'm older I've shed those kind of fears and live free!
Your comment doesn't seem congruent with your signature, "cowgirl up"! Swimming in the ocean is fantastic, and again, of the BILLIONS of people that go in to the ocean each year all around the globe, with 1-3 shark deaths a year, it's just not a justifiable fear to carry around in my opinion.
Lol, okay okay but i'll take my dares on land and or in the air. (Want to sky dive really bad) Which then you think what is worse...eaten to death or splatting on the earth.
Too much thinking, i'm out till Moday guys. Have a great weekend!
Hey Cowgirl,
I totally expected you to respond by tearing off my virtual head! Thought you would be looking for me in a race somewhere just so you could run me off the road.
Oh well, I guess I'm not as good at "stirring the pot" as I thought. And I take back my "cowgirl up" comment too, if you have the guts to skydive I guess we have to forgive you for fearing sharks!
Ha ha ha escape. (lol)
Ah, you better take back that comment. (lol) When and if ever I swim in the ocean I'll be sure to get at you to let you know and have proof with a pic., for the time being I'll stick with the mutated fish in the Great Lakes. =P
