Ive recently upped my mileage (not by that much) while running. Lately, as soon as I begin running, I get a terrible pain just to the right of my tailbone. Pain is the greatest when I strike the ground but is still noticable during the rest of my stride. Stays sore even during my cool down...any suggestions??

Likely could be sciatica. Which I suffer with every year cause I up my training, don't stretch enough, and sit in a chair most of the day... :( Was thinking today on my ride I need to seriously seek out treatment as it's not getting much better.

I had the same problem, but tried to train through the pain. DO NOT DO THIS. See a doctor, if you can. I had two herniated discs that burst and I couldn't walk for two months. I can't even desribe how painful it was. Codeine didn't help. I literally woke up screaming at night because of the pain. I eventually had to have surgery to remove the burst discs. In the meantime, my left leg atrophied by at least 2" in circumference.

Sorry, I don't mean to scare you, but you really, really need to get it checked out. Maybe your condition isn't as bad, but no one should go through what I did.

In my multiple injury experience, this is probably from messed up running mechanics. All my injuries have stemmed from some small thing that is magnified by increased use. Most non-athletes have this going on all the time but it's not noticed because they don't ask much of their bodies. It's like a car. If you drive 30 mph you may not notice a problem that will appear when you are driving 100 mph.
My humble recommendation is to see a physical therapist or chiropractor that specializes in sports. It's the fastest way to recover. I had a hip pain that bothered me 9 months. I went to orthopedics and got an MRI. I finally got my but over to a physical therapist that took care of the problem in 2 sessions.

Just my 2 cents,

-T

Could be Sciatica. Could be any number of problems...after rest, if it persists, see your Doc. Sounds similar to Sciatic pain I've endured before. The sciatic nerve is huge and can become impinged on the pelvis and it takes time and pt sometimes to get it to improve...attempting to train through it can result in some serious complications.
I recommend you check out the basics here:

All the information is physician reviewed...unlike wikipedia which can be changed by almost anyone.
At school our students are not allowed to use Wiki- anything as the quality of the information is always suspect.
