I'm thinking of replacing/upgrading my base and aero bars. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm thinking of going the all-carbon route and have been looking at Profile Designs' Carbon x 1.5 or Cobra Wing Base w/ Cobra extensions. What are your thoughts on an integrated base/aero bar vs. separate base and aero bars? Finally, how do I choose the size of my base bar? I have pretty wide shoulders, so I should go with a larger base bar, right?

Thank for all of your thoughts!

I have a Cobra Wing Base, with Carbon Strike aero bars on my Trek TTX 9.0. I tried the Cobra extensions, but the S-bend (vs. the Carbon Strike L-bend) just wasn't comfortable for me. I spent quite a lot of time on different combinations of aero bars and base before settling on what I did - the base I chose for the carbon (obviously) and the aerodynamics of the wing (and, since we're all friends here, because the thing looks totally sick). I have wide shoulders too, and that's where the integrated base/aero fell apart for me - it was important to have as much flexibility as I could in where the armrests were located on the aero bar, so clip-ons were the way to go for me.

What are you looking to improve upon with your current setup? Might be a good idea to consider your aero setup relative to the rest of your bike fit, so that any changes you're making are seamless to what you're used to (or an improvement, of course). Best of luck!

You shouldn't be using your base bar much. I have wide shoulders, too, but my base bar is 40cm. I use a separate base bar and extensions b/c it's cheaper and it's easier to adjust. If you can get an integrated one to fit perfectly, they are cooler. :)

As far as weight, I had some $1200 integrated carbon Vuka bars that came on my bike that weighed the same as my separate Vision aluminum ones. I sold the Vuka bars on ebay.

It sounds like separate aero and base bars are the way to go as they allow for more flexibility. The base bar I have now is not aero as it is round. But honestly, I think carbon aero bars look sweet. Thanks for the help!

I would go with the seperate combo. I have used the carbon x1.5 and found it didn't fit as well as i would like, since you can't adjust the stem angle.
