I did my first triathlon of the season today. I've done one other before, about 2 years ago. I got a heart rate monitor for christmas that I've loved while training. Usually when I am running, my HR is around 150-165 max, and usually around 145 when biking. My average HR for today's race was 158! It was around 160 for most of the bike, and got up to 175 during the run. Has this happened to anybody else? I can't figure out why my heart rate would be SO much higher during the race!

It's all about the adrenaline on race day. Getting 165 during training feels like I'm working really hard. During a race I think I'm holding back, and it's over 170.

When I first got my HRM I did sprints up a hill to find out my max heart rate. The absolute highest I could peak at was 191. During an 8k race I kept my HR at an AVERAGE of 181 over a 36 min race! Crazy.

Dear Nanhosen, there is nothing unusual about your heart rate being elevated to those levels during a race. As TryScott pointed out, on race day adrenalin is surging through our veins and we are pushing ourselves a lot harder than we typically do in training... the adrenalin blocks a lot of our pain and fatigue, that's why it may not seem like we're working as hard as we can. Now, that said, if your heart rate surges to 240's - 260's, that's cause for concern and may be indicative of something more serious. I experienced an episode like this during a race and was later diagnosed with PSVT... a form of tachycardia.

Without even applying exertion, your heart rate can fluctuate due to many reasons including: hydration levels, stress, the amount of sleep you got the night before, etc.
