Tapering

Hey everyone,
I'm counting down the hours until my flight to Tamp Friday morning for St. A's on Sunday. I've been good at tapering this time around and haven't done too much this week. OK, not much at all really. Just a 30 min run on Monday and an hour of court volleyball on Tuesday. I know, volleyball wasn't smart but the games weren't competitive, just for fun. However, half way through the first game and really the rest of the week, I've been just a ball of energy. I can't sit still or focus and that's after cutting back on coffee.

Anyone else go through stuff like that? I'm not meeting up with the rest of my team until 5AM so I thought I'd reach out to you guys and see what you all go through on a taper week.

How come you've done nothing? Tapering doesn't mean stop, it means cut back on volume.

To answer your question... yes, I get amped and I'm ready to go. But I don't cut back on coffee. :)

I did a 30 min run on Monday, and played volleyball on Tuesday. Wednesday I ended up working 15 hours and today I'm running around trying to get everything ready for the trip. I'm planning on an easy bike/run Friday after I pick up my bike and a quick swim on Saturday. So I haven't been completely sedentary but compared to what I was doing, this is nothing.

It wasn't an intentional cutting back on coffee but didn't get a chance to step out for more. I don't know what I'd do without that stuff. :)

I will be starting my taper next week for the Gulf Coast Half going from 13 to 15 hour weeks to 7 hour a week for the next two. In the past I have always felt like a sack of potatoes during the first week of tapering and my mind keeps telling me that I am getting weaker. It's always been hard for me to taper though, I always want to get one more big workout in thinking it will help. But by race day I feel stronger than ever.

My first race is in 2 days, so I don't know much about tapering... does sleeping in yesterday count? Definitely driving me crazy though!

When I was taught about proper tapering during my rowing career. I was told that a good way to judge it's working is when you have to work to hold yourself back because you have so much energy you're eager to get rid of it...so in that regard, it sounds like you're doing a solid job.

You are supposed to have a ball of energy. That's the point of tapering but don't stop working out. You may want to lightly run for 30 mins saturday just to get a bit loose and the blood flowing. After that 30 mins, you will probably feel even more energized.

I swam for 30 mins today while trying out my wetsuit and just took it easy but I had to hold back in order not to expend too much energy. I am told that's a good feeling.

Keep that restless energy tucked away. It's going to help you Sunday.
