what do you wear under there?
(when you're running only)

i've gotten to the point where running in tighty-whities has gotten old...(chafing!)

I wear Calvin Klein Sport Briefs. Kinda pricey but comfortable in the long haul.

either running shorts with the built-ins, or under armor for the shorts that have no built-ins... cotton kills

As long as its not raining ive always gotten by with regular old boxer-briefs, maybe a bit of lubrication for longer runs. If its raining however, those cause some mad chafing so i would recommend it so much.

Well as a Girl, I can say nothing. My all my shorts/skirts have built ins. Hubby does the same, all his shorts have built-ins. In the winter when it is tool cold for shorts, he wears under armour (briefs) under his tights.

Yeah fiance and I both go with the built-ins -- or the tight/compression style shorts with nothing under them. And we just wear shorts under tights.

agreed with all the above, built-ins are the only way to go, underarmour tights when its super cold.

Nike Built-ins here. Adam let me know, and I can get you a pair on the cheap.

Running shorts with a built in. Tri shorts...nothing. Same with bike shorts. Tights in the winter...Patagonia wind panel brief.

I wait till midnight and go streaking!

Or I use my De Soto running shorts with built-ins if the sun is out.

I like these New Balance shorts I have with built-in compression shorts, but I can't find them anymore, and my two pairs are my most valued possessions. I am thinking of getting some compression shorts. Can anyone tell me what the best compression shorts are? My one requirement is that they have a "anatomically designed" seam placement.... that is, no stitching crossing areas that don't like to be crossed.

Uhm, no. Just no. Try actual running shorts with built-ins. The fabric is man-made (usualy poly) so it does not absorb moisture. $10-$20 at a specialty running store and they will last a long time. And as pugsly said, cotton kills.

thanks all! I knew the generic answer, but the products give me some help in searching.

Jeremy, I might have to take you up on it (assuming they're new and not used :) )

i live for running shorts, i love the split variety. Asics makes my favourite kind, and i have a few pairs of nike shorts that i like almost as much. I love them so much i often wear them as my underware.

But to answer the main question, if you get real running shorts you don't have to wear anything under them.

UA heat gear compression shorts always! I wear them for the air force physical training and when running and they are great. The seems are well placed keep chaffing to an absolute min, as in none. I personally can't just use built ins I still chaff, and these stop it totally.

I love Nike's clothes. They fit me well and seem to last a reasonable time. No undies.

The latest Nike pro series compression shorts I have gotten don't have the stitching crossing any areas. They are also think enough to keep any thigh hair you might have from poking though the shorts allowing hairs from different thighs to tie themselves together and rip each other out with every stride.

I actually really like Jockey 3-D products--the boxer briefs or midway brief. They make some products with no seams and they are comfortable---don't ride up, etc. I think they are a little more comfortable than compression shorts--they don't feel as constricting.
