Hello everyone: I haven't been on in a while and that is because my life right now is kind of hectic. In a nutshell, for family reasons, I just don't have enough time (well, this is how it feels) to train for IM Wisconsin like I did in 06.
Also, I feel that, at this time, I am not as well prepared as I was at this time in 06. I can only go swimming 2x a week, just for about 1:15, I don't feel I am riding enough, (right now, I only ride about 90 miles a week) and, since my f#%&* Achilles is bothering me, I only run 4-5 miles 3x a week.
So far, I have only done about 4 long runs, usually 10 miles, on 4 Sundays.
So, you see? I am worried, that come September, I wont be as ready as I was in 06.
Then, to make matters worse, everyone in my family, friends and neighbors, are thinking that I am going to "kick a$$" this time around, "because, you already done one and you did so good...." "This time you will get that spot to Kona...." "I would love to go to Hawaii, mom......." and stuff like that.
I know that not every IM is the same. The fact I finish 3rd. in 06 doesn't necesarily mean it will happen again and certainly, it doesn't mean that I will kick everyone's a$$ and finish first this time around.
Again, I will say, that my only goal for this second IM is the same as the first one............FINISH!!!!!!!!! That is all I want. I want to finish happy, healthy and with no trip to the medical tent, that is for sure.
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent this concerns of mine.

Maria.

Read your own signature quote from Teddy R. You're daring something mighty. Maybe you'll soar like an eagle, or maybe this will be part of that checkerboard and it won't go the way you want. But, focus on what you can control and be proud of your courage for attempting something even under what are less than ideal lifestyle conditions.

Life gets in the way. Triathletes are notoriously obsessive. First of all, remember that you are so much farther ahead of where you were last year because of all of training you did for IM. Mentaly as well, you are so much better off. There will be times when training doesn't go as planned. Myself, I am seeing a similar thing. Last year in prep for my first IM, everyone gave me extra slack time wise to train, but this year, I am making up for all of the committments I blew off last year. I am having to be more creative.

1. Make the most of your mornings. This is often the time of day when people don't require much of you.
2. Ride to work(if you can!)
3. Let your injuries recover. With Achilles Tendonitis, you should take some time off to let it fully recover. You are doing yourself no favours running on it.
4. September is a long ways away! If you are focusing solely on IM you don't need to be going long yet!
5. Noone will be disapointed in you if you don't "kick ass". You don't really NEED to do better, you just want to. Most people don't fully understand what it means to compete in Ironman. They are just trying to be supportive, not putting pressure on you.

hope this helps

Hi Maria,

Like psychosid says, September 7 is a long ways off. People can and do train for IM races in 3 or 4 months. Priority #1 right now should be letting that injury heal.

While you're healing, you need to look realistically at your available training time and decide what will work best for you without making work or family life suffer. Maybe you can get creative and find 15 hours a week. Maybe you can only find 10. Whatever the answer is, embrace it and set your schedule and expectations accordingly.

Finally, do not let anyone else's hopes and dreams for your race influence how you decide to train and race. They're not the ones training and racing--you are. I agree that it sounds like your friends and family are just trying to support you. But there's a big difference between hearing from them that you have a chance for Kona vs. worrying about letting them down. It sounds like you have set your goal: finishing. So when someone next brings up Kona, just smile and tell them they are very kind to think that about you, but that you will be perfectly happy finishing and anything else is just gravy.

See you on September 7!

PJT

It is a long way off, and your family will love you no matter what. Good luck in the months to come, and remember we're here when you are worried :)

I really like what PJT just said. Do not let anyone else's hopes and dreams for your race influence how you decide to train and race. EVERY single athlete out there is different, has different personal and professional commitments. Kona? Give me a break. If you do an Ironman, you have done one of the most amazing athletic attempts that exists. I had babies without using drugs during labor and still can't decide which was more difficult...that or finishing Ironman. :-)

In any case, rest the Achilles, then just work up to what you have time for. My longest run last year before Canada (due to a car accident injury) was only 14 miles and I finished! Good luck and keep us posted.

From my point of view, you are in fine shape! You are doing plenty of training now..90miles a week! that is good biking. 2 1:15 swims, you are fine. 20+miles a week..good base. As july comes, just allot yourself enough time to get in 1 long swim, 1 long bike and 1 long run...even if you have to get up at 4.30am...you can get a 3 hour run in by 7.30..your family won't even know you were gone. trust me...you have not a worry...it always comes together. for now, don't overdo the run - give your foot time to heal...spend time on the bike and you'll keep your fitness...best wishes

Hello again, my friends: I just came back from a wonderful 40 mile ride. I was only going for 30 but.........How can I waste such an amazing afternoon. My goodness!!!!!! it was maybe 75 degrees and gorgeous here in NW Indiana. I feel great and, in days like this, my confidence is back in shape.
I must say that I was able to go on this ride because my hubby is golfing and also, because my son in law didn't work over time and came to get my grandchildren early so, as soon as they left, I changed into my riding clothes, I got my bike, filled my bottles with Gatorade, got a couple of gels, my helmet, sunglasses, cell phone and I was out that door.
I want to thank you guys for reasuring me about this race. Yes, sometimes, Life gets in the way and all I have to do is to rearange my training around my grandkids, that is all.
I am a crature of habit, I like things to stay the same, I don't like changes to much, you know? and that is why I am worrying that I wont hit the workouts the same as in 06 but, as long as I can get some of them in, I think I will be ok.
Yes, Kona is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay in the back of my mind, I guess maybe is in the back of everyone's mind as well on the morning of an Iron Man Triathlon, and, like PJT said, if this happens, it will be gravy.
In 06, I was just so thrilled to have finished this race in that cold and rainy day so, the next morniing, when I went to pick up my stuff and my certificate and found out I finished in 3rd. place, well, I was just in total amazement.
This year, I will go and do my very best and, by the way, this race will be exactly on September 7th., my 57th. Birthday, now, ain't that grand?
As for all my dear family and friends who are hoping I get that lonely Kona spot in my age group
I am grateful, very grateful indeed. I think they have faith in me (maybe more than I have in myself) and I know that, if I don't get it, they will be just as proud.
My dear husband still thinks this is way to much for me, he still thinks it's to extreme but I feel so good and, aside for my sore Achilles, nothing else hurts.
I will follow your advise, rest it and I will also go see a doctor. I know it will be ok.
Again, thank you so much for all your encouraging words and I am looking forward to seeing and meeting all of you who are doing this Iron Man in Madison this year.
God Bless you all.
Maria.
